Sony’s 2005 job cuts in South Wales were tied to falling demand for traditional cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions as flat-screen TVs gained ground. The affected Welsh operations made CRT tubes and assembled televisions; they were not LCD factories. Sony’s later plan to expand LCD production in Slovakia shows where it expected European supply to grow, but does not establish that Welsh jobs moved there.
What Sony announced in Wales in 2005
Sony announced two separate rounds of planned job losses at its Pencoed and Bridgend sites. Eurofound’s records, which identify BBC News as the underlying contemporary reporting, give the figures:

These are the figures for two announcements, not a verified final tally of people who ultimately lost their jobs. Both records describe planned cuts.
Why demand for CRT televisions was weakening
The plants affected made CRT picture tubes and assembled televisions. The market was shifting toward flat-screen products, including LCD TVs, putting pressure on traditional television production. In January 2005, a Sony spokesperson told The Guardian: “The move away from CRT-based TVs accelerated last year with flat panel products now accounting for around half the UK market by value.” That was the company’s explanation as reported by the newspaper; the article did not identify an independent source or methodology for the market-share figure.

LCD growth was real—but Sony’s Welsh sites were not LCD plants
Sony’s 2007 annual report described rapid expansion in the LCD television market. The company said the global market reached approximately 51.5 million units in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2007, 2.5 times the previous year’s size. Sony also reported shipping approximately 6.3 million BRAVIA LCD TVs in fiscal 2006.
The same report described a plant under construction in Nitra, Slovakia, with planned annual European capacity of 3 million LCD TVs. This was a forward-looking production plan, not a report of realized output. It is evidence of Sony’s planned LCD capacity in Slovakia—not evidence that Welsh CRT jobs or production were transferred there.

What support was discussed for affected workers
A July 2005 written answer in the House of Commons said Welsh bodies and Jobcentre Plus were working with Sony to help affected employees find alternative jobs. It also said the Secretary of State had discussed possible further investment at Pencoed with Sony chief executive Sir Howard Stringer. The available parliamentary record does not establish what happened to individual workers afterward.

A 2020 Welsh Government release described the Bridgend Sony UK Technology Centre as a camera manufacturing and customer-service operation. That dated account shows a different focus from the CRT television activity affected by the 2005 restructuring; it does not establish the site’s employment or operations in 2026.
