MINI is a brand owned by BMW Group. For the fifth-generation petrol MINI Cooper introduced in 2024, BMW Group identifies a British production chain: parts are made in Swindon and Hams Hall, while Oxford handles body-shell production, paint and final assembly. That does not establish where every Cooper variant is built.
Who owns MINI?
BMW Group owns the MINI brand; MINI is not a stand-alone automaker. BMW Group lists MINI among its brands, and its corporate history says BMW AG acquired the Rover Group in 1994, then sold Rover in 2000 while retaining MINI. BMW Group’s brands page and corporate history describe the brand and its ownership history.
Where the current petrol MINI Cooper is made
BMW Group’s account of the fifth-generation Cooper’s production, published 11 March 2024, describes work across three English plants. Each has a distinct role:
| Plant | Production role for the fifth-generation combustion Cooper |
|---|---|
| Swindon, England | Body pressings and sub-assemblies |
| Hams Hall, North Warwickshire, England | Three- and four-cylinder petrol engines |
| Oxford, England | Body-shell production, paint and final assembly |
BMW Group announced that production of the new Cooper began at Oxford on 11 March 2024. In other words, Oxford is the final assembly site named for this model, while some components come from the other UK plants. BMW Group’s production announcement gives the site-by-site breakdown.

How much MINI production takes place in Britain?
In an anniversary release dated 23 April 2026, BMW Group reported that 4,671,664 MINIs had been built in Britain since 2001. The company also described Oxford as the home of MINI production and Swindon as the site where MINI body panels are made. Those are company-reported figures and descriptions, not a model-by-model tally. BMW Group’s 2026 release has the anniversary figures.
Are all MINI Coopers made in England?
Not necessarily. The British production chain above applies to the fifth-generation combustion Cooper described by BMW Group; it should not be generalized to every Cooper drivetrain, model year or sales market. BMW Group has discussed international MINI production, but its 2021 production-history account does not identify which current Cooper versions are built in China. The 2021 account is historical context, not a current allocation list.

What about electric MINI Cooper production?
In September 2023, BMW Group announced plans for Oxford to build the all-electric MINI Cooper 3-door and MINI Aceman from 2026, with Oxford production planned to become exclusively electric by 2030. The announcement records plans at that time; it does not confirm whether the planned 2026 start has occurred or specify the present production location of each electric Cooper version. BMW Group’s 2023 announcement sets out those plans.

If you need to know where a specific car was built—for example, when comparing used cars or checking a vehicle’s provenance—ask MINI or a dealer to confirm the production information for that vehicle using its VIN. Make sure the answer refers to the exact model, model year, drivetrain and sales market; the general factory descriptions above do not determine the origin of every individual vehicle.
