Cisco announced plans to acquire Montreal-based network monitoring firm Accedian Networks on June 21, 2023, and completed the acquisition on September 29, 2023. Cisco said the deal would strengthen its network and service assurance offerings for communications service providers and webscalers, drawing on Accedian’s sensors and Skylight Analytics platform.
What happened to Accedian Networks?
The headline described Cisco’s intent when it announced the transaction; the deal is now complete. Cisco’s acquisition page records the September 29, 2023 closing date. Cisco’s original announcement said the company expected to close in the first quarter of its FY2024, but that was a forecast, not the final date.
Cisco described Accedian as a privately held company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Its FY2024 first-quarter filing also lists Accedian among acquisitions completed during that quarter and characterizes it as a network performance monitoring company (Cisco FY2024 Q1 filing).
What did Accedian bring to Cisco?
Accedian focused on monitoring and assuring network and service performance, especially in service-provider environments. Cisco highlighted two parts of its offering: sensors described as measuring at microsecond-level granularity, and Skylight Analytics, its analytics platform. Cisco positioned these capabilities for service-provider transport networks and 5G services (Cisco acquisition history; Cisco announcement).
#1 Best Overall
- SWITCH PORTS: 16 -Port 10/100/1000
- SIMPLE: Plug-and-play without a need for IT know-how or support.
- FLEXIBLE: Extensive portfolio provides ultimate flexibility from 5 to 24 ports and PoE combinations
- PERFORMANCE: Gigabit Ethernet and integrated quality-of-service (QoS) intelligence optimize delay-sensitive services and improve overall network performance.
- INNOVATIVE DESIGN: Elegant and compact design, ideal for installation outside of wiring closet such as retail stores, open plan offices, and classrooms
Microsecond-level measurement was Cisco’s description of the sensors’ granularity and the product rationale for fine-grained visibility. It should not be read as an independently verified post-acquisition performance result.
Why did Cisco choose Accedian?
Cisco said the acquisition would strengthen its network assurance and analytics portfolio for communications service providers (CSPs) and webscalers. It presented Accedian’s service-provider data and capabilities as complementary to Cisco’s broader assurance tools, including ThousandEyes, with the goal of improving end-to-end visibility across networks and services (Cisco acquisition FAQ).

In Cisco’s June 21 announcement, Accedian CEO Dion Joannou described the intended value of precise measurement: “Microseconds matter to customers and customer experience, and precise, granular performance visibility is a foundational requirement for closed-loop automation, agile telco cloud environments, and latency-sensitive 5G services.” This is the company’s product rationale, not evidence that the acquisition has delivered a measured improvement.
What does the acquisition mean for Accedian customers?
Cisco’s acquisition FAQ instructed existing customers to continue using their established support process for installed products until Cisco notified them of a change. Cisco’s current support materials identify the relevant area as Cisco Provider Connectivity Assurance (formerly Accedian Skylight). Customers should consult that live support page for current operational details.
