There is no single best place to buy crypto for every U.S. buyer. Compare the actual checkout price, the platform’s availability in your state, the coins and features you need, and whether you can withdraw crypto to a wallet you control. This guide reflects information accessed in October 2026; platform fees and availability can change.
How to choose the best place to buy crypto
Compare the whole transaction, not just a headline trading fee. An order can involve a spread, a payment-method charge and, if you move crypto off-platform, a withdrawal or network fee. The final amount of crypto shown in the order preview is often the most useful apples-to-apples comparison.
- All-in cost: Check the total payment and the quantity of crypto you will receive. Look for separate trading, payment, spread and withdrawal costs.
- Availability: Confirm that the platform, asset and feature you want are available in your state. U.S. availability does not mean every state, coin or product is supported.
- Interface: A simplified buy screen may price trades differently from an advanced order book. Compare the interface you will actually use.
- Withdrawal and custody: If you want to hold crypto yourself, confirm that the platform permits withdrawals of that asset to an external wallet.
- Risk terms: Read the platform’s custody, insurance and account-risk disclosures. A platform license is not a government endorsement or a guarantee against loss.
Consumer Reports’ crypto exchange app evaluation, based on screenshots taken in December 2025, covered five large exchanges. It said it did not identify one best exchange because strengths and weaknesses varied across platforms. That is a useful reminder: a good fit depends on what you need, not a universal ranking.

The comparison below is U.S.-oriented. It reflects the cited information available in October 2026, not a guarantee that a feature or fee remains unchanged. “Not stated” means the cited material does not establish a comparable figure.

Treat any ranking as a starting point, then check the provider’s own current disclosures and order preview.
Why the order preview matters more than a headline fee
A trading fee is only one part of what a purchase costs. A platform may include a spread in the displayed price, charge a separate fee for a card or other funding method, or apply a cost when you withdraw crypto. A low-looking trading fee therefore does not, by itself, establish a lower-cost purchase.

Kraken’s official schedule makes the interface distinction concrete: it lists Instant Buy/Sell charges separately from Kraken Pro’s maker/taker tiers, and says Instant Buy/Sell prices include a variable spread as well as trading fees. Fees for funding and withdrawing vary by method and currency. The rates above are the schedule’s displayed figures as accessed October 4, 2026; check the live schedule and your own quote before transacting.
- Select the coin and amount you intend to buy.
- Review the order preview for the total debit, the amount of crypto you will receive, the exchange rate and any listed fees.
- If you are comparing platforms, use the same coin, approximate purchase amount and payment method, and compare the net amount received.
- If you plan to withdraw, check the withdrawal fee and network before buying; those costs may be separate from the purchase quote.
Robinhood’s published comparison uses third-party-checked quotes for BTC, ETH and DOGE dated September 18, 2026. It is a snapshot for specified assets and platforms, not proof of permanent savings or a lasting cheapest-platform ranking; the received amount can differ later.

What to check about state access, assets and withdrawals
Before opening an account or transferring money, look up the platform’s current state list and confirm that the specific coin and feature you want are available where you live. A service may operate in a state while restricting particular assets, transfers or products there. Availability can also change, so a general U.S. platform description is not enough to establish eligibility for your account.
If you may want self-custody, verify that withdrawals are enabled for the asset and that the destination wallet supports the same network. A platform account that lets you buy a coin does not automatically mean you can transfer it to every wallet or network.

Crypto platform protections are not bank-deposit protections
Cryptocurrency is not the same as an insured bank deposit or a conventional brokerage security. Robinhood says its crypto is not FDIC- or SIPC-protected and warns about price volatility, cybersecurity risks, market manipulation and the possibility that selling may be difficult. Treat those as material risks, not as a complete list of possible losses or a prediction of what will happen.
Do not read a platform’s licensing or regulatory status as an endorsement, insurance coverage or promise that you can recover funds after a loss. Review the provider’s custody terms and the protections, if any, that specifically apply to your account and location.

When a hardware wallet makes sense
A hardware wallet is relevant if you choose to manage your own crypto rather than leave it in a platform account. It stores private keys used to control blockchain assets; the assets themselves are not stored inside the device. Self-custody changes who is responsible for access and recovery.
Trezor’s guidance warns that someone who obtains a wallet’s recovery backup may gain access to the funds, and advises never entering that backup on a computer or phone. Keep it private and protected. A hardware wallet does not remove price, network or user-error risks, and a device should be selected only after checking supported assets and networks. Trezor’s security guidance is the manufacturer’s own advice, not an independent comparative test of wallet models.
