The jeweler identified in the headline teaser is Mejuri. The available reporting supports a specific, limited account: CEO Noura Sakkijha told customers that rising gold and silver prices had increased the company’s costs, and Mejuri introduced 10-karat solid-gold products as a more accessible price point. It does not establish a particular crisis, the size of the company’s financial impact, or that every Mejuri item became more expensive.
What happened at Mejuri
A page carrying the original headline names Mejuri in its teaser but provides no fuller account of the “whirlwind” it describes. Separate reporting says the company cited higher gold and silver prices as a source of increased costs and communicated a price increase to customers. Mejuri also presented 10-karat solid gold as a way to offer more accessible prices. This is evidence of a product option and its stated price-point rationale—not proof that the company replaced its other gold products or changed the material in every design.
Why higher gold prices can reach jewelry buyers
Gold is a major input for solid-gold jewelry, so a sustained rise can increase the cost of making or replenishing pieces. A jeweler may respond through some combination of retail prices, materials, product design, sourcing, or the range of prices it offers. How much any one company’s prices move depends on its costs and decisions; broad gold-market figures cannot establish Mejuri’s own sourcing costs, margins, or sales.

Vogue reported that gold rose from $1,548.75 per ounce on January 3, 2020 to $5,019.07 on February 9, 2026, describing the increase over that period as roughly 224%. The same report put gold at $2,028.00 per ounce on January 1, 2024. These are dated market snapshots, not live quotes or measures of what Mejuri paid for gold. Vogue also reported, citing World Gold Council data, that central banks bought more than a thousand tons of gold annually from 2022 onward. Vogue’s industry coverage provides that context.
Silver also matters for jewelers who use it. Vogue reported prices of around $18 per ounce on January 3, 2020, $29.40 in January 2025, and around $83 on February 9, 2026. These dated figures help explain why the company cited both metals, but they do not show the share of Mejuri’s products or costs tied to either one.

What 10K and 14K mean when choosing gold jewelry
Karat measures the proportion of gold in an alloy. Ten-karat gold contains 10 parts gold out of 24; 14-karat contains 14. A 10K piece therefore has a lower gold proportion than a 14K piece. They are different material specifications, not automatically interchangeable choices: a buyer may care about gold content, appearance, durability, price, or the retailer’s own product details.
The reporting also identifies Mejuri bold huggie hoop earrings in 14-karat gold. That example shows the brand offered a 14K option alongside its reported 10K accessible-price offering; it does not verify current availability, price, or equivalence between particular designs. How other jewelers have responded—and what that does not prove about Mejuri
Industry coverage describes designers adapting to rising material costs in several ways:
- Using gold already in stock rather than buying or re-sorting at higher prices.
- Changing designs to use gold more efficiently.
- Adding silver or other materials, or widening the range of available price points.
These are examples reported across the industry, not documented actions by Mejuri. Vogue’s coverage discusses the designers’ approaches.

In a separate May 2025 report, the Associated Press described U.S. merchants buying, selling, and refining gold after prices had cooled from a record above $3,500 per ounce. The AP also reported that some jewelers sourcing from Italy, Turkey, and China faced pressure on margins and demand amid high metal costs and added tariffs. The available reporting does not document a specific operational disruption or financial crisis, quantify Mejuri’s cost increase, or show that all of its product prices changed. For a purchase, compare the exact piece’s karat, construction, materials, and current price rather than assuming a brand-wide change or treating lower-karat gold as the same specification.
