If T-Mobile hasn’t refunded money left on your canceled account, first confirm that your final bill shows an actual credit balance—not a pending adjustment—and check whether 30 days have passed without payment or charge activity. Then ask Customer Service to verify the amount, eligibility, reason for any denial, and refund status. If that does not resolve it, make a documented written request, use T-Mobile’s Notice of Dispute process when appropriate, and consider filing an informal complaint with the FCC.
1. Check that your final bill shows a refund due
Open the final bill and any later statement or adjustment. Confirm that the account is closed and that the amount is a posted credit balance. A pending adjustment, a payment that has not cleared, or an amount already applied elsewhere is not necessarily money available for refund. T-Mobile says an eligible credit may be applied to money owed on another T-Mobile account, and some balances are not eligible for a payment refund. See T-Mobile’s adjustments and refunds guidance.
T-Mobile says a canceled account must have at least 30 days with no payment or charge activity before an eligible credit balance can be refunded, so final charges have time to post. Its cancellation guidance also says that if a credit remains 30 days after the final bill, it will be automatically refunded. These are T-Mobile’s published procedures, not a guarantee that every expected credit qualifies or that a refund will arrive on a particular date. Review T-Mobile’s billing guidance and cancellation guidance.
Why the expected amount may not match the final credit
Do not assume that canceling service automatically earns a prorated refund. T-Mobile says cancellations take effect at the end of the current bill cycle. If the entire account closes, the final bill may also include remaining equipment installment balances. Use the final bill—not an estimate based on a cancellation date—to identify the account’s actual balance.

2. Ask T-Mobile to confirm the balance and refund status
Contact T-Mobile Customer Service as the account holder or an authorized user, and ask the representative to verify each of the following:
- The amount and date of the final credit balance.
- Whether money is owed on another T-Mobile account and the credit has been applied to it.
- Whether the 30-day period without payment or charge activity has elapsed.
- Whether the refund was approved, is still pending, or was declined.
- The specific reason for a denial, the refund destination, and the issuance date if approved.
T-Mobile says eligible overpayment credits generally go back to the original payment method if there is no debt on another T-Mobile account. Its listed reasons for a declined refund include a returned payment, an ineligible balance, a mismatch with the original payment method, failed one-time PIN verification, no credit balance, or a policy restriction. If the explanation does not fit your records, ask for a review and a written explanation. The current steps and typical processing estimates are on T-Mobile’s refunds page.

3. Put the request in writing and keep a record
A written request makes the disputed amount and the remedy you want clear. Include the account holder’s name, billing account number, affected or canceled mobile number, cancellation date, final-bill date, credit amount, and any refund-request or transaction reference. State plainly that you want the eligible final credit refunded, and attach the final bill and relevant payment records.

T-Mobile’s Terms & Conditions list web and phone contact options and Customer Relations by mail at P.O. Box 37380, Albuquerque, NM 87176-7380. The terms say to notify T-Mobile in writing if ordinary contact does not resolve a billing issue.

4. Use the Notice of Dispute process if ordinary contact fails
T-Mobile’s terms describe a written Notice of Dispute as the first formal step for giving the company an opportunity to resolve a claim. Include enough information to identify the account and understand the request:
- The account holder’s name, billing account number, and affected mobile number.
- A clear description of the disputed refund and supporting documents.
- A good-faith calculation of the amount at issue.
- The exact resolution you want, such as payment of a specified final credit.
The terms generally require written notice of a billing dispute within 60 days after first receipt of the disputed bill or charge, unless law provides otherwise. They also describe a 60-day period after T-Mobile receives a Notice of Dispute to attempt resolution before arbitration or court proceedings may begin. These are separate periods with different starting points. Puerto Rico has a distinct provision, and applicable law and account terms may affect an individual claim. Act promptly and check the current terms; for advice about your specific legal rights, consult a qualified lawyer.
5. Consider an FCC complaint if the carrier process stalls
If you cannot resolve the issue with T-Mobile, you can submit an informal complaint through the FCC Complaints Center, which accepts complaints about phone billing. Provide a concise timeline and attach the final bill, evidence of the credit, your refund request, and T-Mobile’s responses. The FCC page describes a complaint intake route; it does not promise that filing will result in a refund.
