NI agreed to acquire OptimalPlus on June 2, 2020, and completed the deal on July 6. The $365 million transaction added enterprise analytics software to NI’s test and measurement capabilities, with the stated aim of connecting data across product design, testing and manufacturing. “Doubling down on the IC market” was contemporaneous trade-press framing, not a description of a deal limited to integrated circuits: the companies also highlighted automotive and electronics.

What NI acquired and when

NI announced a definitive agreement to acquire OptimalPlus on June 2, 2020, then announced that the acquisition had closed on July 6, 2020. OptimalPlus supplied data analytics software for the semiconductor, automotive and electronics industries. NI disclosed a transaction value of $365 million and said OptimalPlus had revenue of $51 million in 2019; both figures were reported by NI, not established by an independent market study. NI’s June 2 announcement and July 6 closing announcement provide the deal details.

Why the deal was described as a semiconductor bet

NI brought test systems and automated test and measurement capabilities. OptimalPlus brought analytics for semiconductor manufacturing data, alongside growing activity in automotive and electronics. The combination was intended to extend NI’s reach from capturing data in test and development settings toward analyzing it across enterprise manufacturing operations.

EE Times framed the acquisition as NI “doubling down on the IC market” and reported NI CEO Eric Starkloff’s shorthand for the ambition: “take it all from lab to production.” That framing captures the semiconductor significance, but the announced scope was broader than ICs. NI and OptimalPlus also pointed to automotive and electronics applications. EE Times’ contemporary account discusses the market context.

What the analytics software was meant to do

The strategic idea was to connect test and manufacturing data from real-world devices across product design, characterization and production. NI said that combining its test capabilities with OptimalPlus analytics could help customers gain product insights and improve quality, yield and efficiency. Those were the companies’ expected benefits; the announcements do not establish that the acquisition delivered measured improvements.

In NI’s 2021 annual report, “NI Optimal Plus” was described as “Production data pipeline and analytics tools to generate insights and deploy product manufacturing actions that improve product performance, quality, output and cost.” That portfolio description emphasizes the intended operational loop: gather production data, analyze it, then use the resulting insights to guide manufacturing actions. NI’s 2021 annual filing contains the description.

Rank #2
Upgraded Semiconductor Tester Compatible with DCA55 Analyzer
  • 【Accurate Detection of All Component Types, Meeting Core Semiconductor Testing Needs】 Auto-identifies 10+ semiconductor components incl. diodes, LED, BJTs, FETs, thyristors. No manual mode switching, suits scenarios: electronic maintenance, component screening
  • 【Fully Automatic Operation Design, Easy for Beginners】 3 probes connect to pins (2 for 2-pin). Auto power-off unattended. Simple, intuitive, no professional background needed
  • 【Short-Circuit Test Current Protection】Its test current into a short circuit is - 5.5mA up to 5.5mA. This limit prevents excessive current from damaging the instrument or the tested components during short-circuit conditions
  • 【Output Voltage Rating Constraint】The device’s output is constrained by the - 5.1V up to 5.1V voltage rating to prevent excessive voltage stress on internal circuits and tested components
  • 【Durable Design and Maintenance, Ensuring Stable Use】 Compact, shock-resistant. Replace yearly, auto low-battery prompt. Power-on self-test with fault code for troubleshooting, extending life

Examples of manufacturing applications

NI’s current OptimalPlus applications page lists uses including yield management and scrap avoidance, quality-escape prevention, monitoring, defect analysis and new-product introduction. These are vendor-described capabilities and benefits, not independent validation of results. The page directs prospective customers to contact sales; it does not establish public pricing, licensing terms or support arrangements. NI’s OptimalPlus applications page has the current overview.

How NI’s role changed—and what the deal did not prove

The intended strategic shift was from NI’s established role in test and measurement data capture toward enterprise analysis that could connect data across more of a product’s lifecycle. The deal’s announced rationale paired semiconductor test systems with manufacturing analytics, while also extending into automotive and electronics. It was a strategic expansion, not evidence by itself of realized quality gains, faster time to market or improved customer economics.

OptimalPlus’s $51 million in 2019 revenue and the $365 million transaction value provide deal context, but they are not measures of the size of the IC market or proof of acquisition synergies. NI supplied these figures in its 2020 deal announcements.

What happened to NI after the acquisition

Emerson completed its acquisition of NI on October 11, 2023. Emerson said NI would become its Test & Measurement segment; Emerson’s 2025 annual filing continued to identify NI as a segment within Software and Control. The OptimalPlus acquisition therefore sits within NI’s earlier strategy, while NI itself is now part of Emerson’s reporting structure.
