Correct that item, validate the invoice again, and check for an existing IRN before retrying—especially after a timeout. Repeatedly submitting unchanged data can create duplicate requests without resolving the original problem.
What happens when an IRP generates an IRN?
The IRP checks key invoice details. If reporting succeeds, it generates an Invoice Reference Number (IRN), digitally signs the invoice data, and returns a signed QR code. The IRN is a 64-character hash. The IRIS IRP FAQ describes the process this way: “On reporting, IRP will generate a unique ‘Invoice Reference Number (IRN)’, digitally sign it and return the e-invoice with QR code.” See the IRIS IRP FAQ and IRIS IRP knowledge base.
Start with the full error message or code displayed by the IRP. The examples below map common failures to checks that can resolve them. Error codes and portal master data can change, so confirm them against the current portal guidance.
How to fix common IRN errors
Duplicate IRN or duplicate request
IRP error code 2150 indicates an attempt to register a document that already has an IRN. A duplicate request can also occur when two submissions for the same document are sent at nearly the same time. If the first request succeeded but its response was lost or timed out, submitting again may return a duplicate error even though an IRN already exists. The IRIS IRP knowledge base explains the duplicate validation.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
- Check your ERP, billing system, or submission log for a successful response and saved IRN.
- If the outcome of the first request is uncertain, use the applicable IRP lookup process to check for the document’s existing IRN before registering it again.
- Prevent parallel submissions for the same document, and save the IRN as soon as a successful response arrives.
Do not launch repeated registration requests just because the first response was missing; first establish whether the document was registered.
Invalid, inactive, or mismatched GSTIN
Check that the supplier and recipient GSTINs are present, correctly entered, and active for the relevant invoice date. The IRP validates GSTIN details against taxpayer data. If a GSTIN is valid and active on the GST common portal but is rejected by a particular IRP, use that IRP’s “Update from GST Common Portal” function if available. If the GST common portal shows the GSTIN as invalid or cancelled, confirm the counterparty’s current registration details before proceeding. The IRP validation guidance is in the IRIS IRP knowledge base.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
Also check the request context: the submission must be associated with the supplier GSTIN or, where applicable, the e-commerce operator GSTIN. If the authenticated or request-header GSTIN does not match the party identified by the payload, the IRP can reject the request. See the IRIS IRP knowledge base.
Future document date or late reporting
The IRP rejects a future document date. Compare the invoice date with the date used in the submission and correct an entry error rather than changing unrelated tax fields.
Rank #3

There is also a reporting-age restriction for certain taxpayers. An IRIS IRP notice says that, effective 1 April 2025, taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover (AATO) of ₹10 crore or more must report invoices, credit notes, and debit notes within 30 days of the document date; reporting after that period is restricted. Confirm that the taxpayer and document fall within the notice’s scope and check the current IRIS IRP notice. A reporting window that has expired cannot be resolved by changing unrelated invoice data.
HSN, UQC, state, PIN, or other master-data errors
Check the HSN against the IRP’s current master data and confirm that the code is appropriate for goods or services. Also verify the unit quantity code (UQC), tax rate, place of supply (POS), state, PIN-to-state mapping, country, port, and currency codes where applicable. A code that looks commercially reasonable may still fail if it does not match the portal’s current master data. The IRIS IRP knowledge base covers field and master-data validations.

If a GSTIN is being rejected despite being active on the GST common portal, check whether the IRP’s taxpayer data needs updating rather than changing the GSTIN in the invoice without confirmation.
Tax treatment or line-item arithmetic
Recheck the transaction classification, place of supply, taxable value, discount, quantity, tax rate, and calculated totals. For an intra-state supply, CGST and SGST generally apply where appropriate rather than IGST; the correct treatment depends on the transaction’s facts. Do not alter tax merely to make a validation pass.
Best Value
- 2 part carbonless forms (White originals, Canary duplicates) for invoicing customers
- Wraparound cover attached to back to place between sets
- Consecutively numbered within each book
- 50 sets per book
- Space at top for company stamp
- Check that CGST and SGST amounts are consistent with each other where applicable.
- Recalculate tax amounts from the taxable value and applicable rate.
- Check the assessable value after discounts and confirm that line amounts and invoice totals add up.
- Ensure each line has a quantity where required and a unique serial number.
The IRP validation table notes a ±1 tolerance for certain line-amount checks; this is not a general allowance to adjust figures. Correct the affected calculation using the applicable transaction treatment. See the IRIS IRP knowledge base.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the submission workflow before generating again
Validation issues can arise whether an invoice is entered through a portal, uploaded in bulk, or sent from an ERP or API. Submission channel does not change the underlying invoice validations. Use the IRIS workflow guidance for the exact controls available in your account.
- Review the required fields, formats, and length limits for the invoice type.
- Run the portal’s validation and fix each error it identifies before selecting Generate IRN.
- For bulk processing, validate the records, produce the required JSON, and upload it using the portal workflow described in the IRIS IRP user guide.
- After submission, check the processing status and response fields for acknowledgment, IRN, signed invoice, signed QR code, and status.
- If a submission failed or timed out, check its status or look up an existing IRN before sending the same document again.
What to do after an IRN has been generated
If the invoice contains an error
The IRIS IRP FAQ says an e-invoice cannot be amended in place on the portal. It describes cancellation within 24 hours, subject to e-way bill status and sequence. After that window, it points to a credit-note and GSTR-1 correction route in relevant cases. A cancelled invoice’s IRN remains traceable and cannot be reused for a different invoice. Rules can depend on the transaction and date, so check the current official guidance before acting; these steps are not individualized tax advice. See the IRIS IRP FAQ.
If the e-invoice is missing from GSTR-1
Successful IRP data is normally auto-populated into the supplier’s GSTR-1. If it has not appeared, the IRIS IRP FAQ says to enter the details manually and report the discrepancy through the official GST-system route described there. If GSTR-1 details were edited or re-uploaded, how the source or IRN is presented may differ. See the IRIS IRP FAQ.
