U.S. Space Command headquarters directs military space operations: it plans and integrates spacepower, employs joint forces, and works with allies and partners to deter aggression, defend U.S. interests and counter threats. It is not the same organization as the U.S. Space Force, which organizes, trains and equips space professionals. The command’s headquarters presence is in transition: official updates in April 2026 described initial operations at Redstone Arsenal, but did not establish that the full headquarters had moved there.
What is U.S. Space Command responsible for?
U.S. Space Command (USSPACECOM) is a unified combatant command. Its mission is to plan, execute and integrate military spacepower into multi-domain global operations, working with allies and partners to deter aggression, defend national interests and, when necessary, defeat threats. The command also delivers space capabilities to joint and combined forces and protects and defends the space domain. USSPACECOM’s mission statement describes that operational role.
The command describes its astrographic area of responsibility as extending from the Kármán Line—62 miles (100 km) above mean sea level—to the Moon and beyond. That is the boundary description on its official FAQ, not a claim that the command controls every activity or object in that expanse.
How is U.S. Space Command different from the Space Force?
They have complementary responsibilities, but they are not interchangeable. The Space Force is an armed service; USSPACECOM is a combatant command that employs forces in operations. The Space Force organizes, trains and equips space forces, then provides them to USSPACECOM and other combatant commands. USSPACECOM draws on joint forces across the services.

USSPACECOM is joint: its service components represent the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force. A command chart in a 2025 presentation also depicts the following components and joint organizations:

Where is headquarters, and what is happening at Redstone Arsenal?
The command’s FAQ identifies Colorado Springs, Colorado, as its headquarters and lists personnel and functions at Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado, Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It also says the command’s final size is being determined through a manpower analysis. The FAQ does not provide a final headcount.
In April 2026, USSPACECOM reported that personnel from its J2 Intelligence Directorate had relocated to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and described Redstone as the designated headquarters location. On April 29, the command announced that it had taken operational control of a facility there for the Joint Intelligence Support Element, calling it the first operational element of the headquarters at Redstone. Those announcements document a transition and initial operations; they do not say that all headquarters functions or the entire command had moved. See the command’s April 15 transition update and April 29 facility announcement for those dated milestones.
