What happened to Amazon Restaurants?
Amazon announced the closure on June 10, 2019. A company spokesperson told GeekWire: “As of June 24th, we will discontinue the Amazon Restaurants business in the US.” The service had launched in Seattle in 2015 and expanded to more than 20 U.S. cities, according to GeekWire’s contemporaneous report.

Amazon also said that many of the small number of affected employees had already found other roles at the company, and that it would provide personalized support to others seeking work inside or outside Amazon.
Why did Amazon close the service?
Amazon did not give a single definitive public explanation in the announcement reported by GeekWire. Contemporary Associated Press coverage described a competitive market that included Uber Eats and DoorDash. It also reported that Mizuho analyst Jeremy Scott estimated Amazon had about 2% of the U.S. market. That was an analyst estimate, not an official Amazon figure or a government market measurement.

The closure announcement followed Amazon’s leading a $575 million Deliveroo funding round by less than a month, GeekWire reported. The timing alone does not establish that the investment caused the shutdown. In its 2020 final report on the Amazon–Deliveroo transaction, the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) examined Amazon’s interest in restaurant delivery and evidence relating to the U.S. closure. That regulatory analysis provides context, but it is not proof of one simple motive for the decision.
Did Amazon Restaurants close in the U.K. too?
Yes, but the U.K. service ended earlier. GeekWire reported that Amazon closed its U.K. program in November 2018. The U.S. service ended on June 24, 2019; the two shutdowns were separate events, not one simultaneous closure.

What about Amazon Daily Dish?
Amazon also planned to close Daily Dish, its workplace lunch-delivery service, on June 14, 2019. That date was ten days before the U.S. Amazon Restaurants shutdown. Daily Dish and Amazon Restaurants were related food-delivery offerings, but they had different services and closure dates.
