No reliable public estimate of Tom Wagner’s personal net worth is established by the available sources. Knighthead Capital Management reported about $9.5 billion in assets under management in 2023, but that is the firm’s figure—not Wagner’s personal wealth.
What is Tom Wagner’s net worth?
There is no reliable, attributable personal net worth figure for Wagner in the available sources. The often-cited wealth-related number is Knighthead Capital Management’s approximately $9.5 billion in assets under management, reported in a Birmingham City board announcement in 2023. Assets under management are funds or assets managed by the firm; they are not the firm’s own net worth and cannot be treated as Wagner’s personal fortune.
The 2023 figure is historical and is not a current AUM estimate. Without a credible source identifying Wagner’s personal assets and liabilities, any specific net worth estimate would be speculation.
What businesses and investments is Wagner associated with?
Wagner co-founded Knighthead Capital Management with Ara Cohen in 2008 and is one of its co-CEOs. A July 2023 Birmingham City board announcement said he had previously worked for Goldman Sachs. The announcement described Knighthead as an event-driven, deep-value investment adviser focused on businesses that may need financial or operational restructuring.

That company announcement listed Knighthead activities including a long/short hedge fund, closed-end credit vehicles, real-estate lending and insurance asset management. These are descriptions published by the firm in 2023, not an independent audit of its current holdings or operations.
Who owns Birmingham City?
Wagner is Birmingham City’s chairman, but the club’s corporate ownership is held through Knighthead’s subsidiary, Shelby Companies Limited (SCL). SCL agreed to acquire a 45.64% stake in Birmingham City and ownership of St Andrew’s in 2023. In November 2025, BBC Sport reported that SCL had bought the remaining 51.1% shareholding in the previously Chinese-owned club.

After that purchase, BBC Sport reported SCL held 96.64% of Birmingham City Limited, the company that owns 100% of the football club and women’s team. The distinction is important: Wagner’s leadership role is not the same as personally owning the club.
What are Wagner’s plans for Birmingham City?
Premier League ambition
In a BBC Sport interview published on 4 June 2025, Wagner said reaching the Premier League the following season “is certainly the goal.” Birmingham had won the 2024–25 League One title and set an EFL record for points in a season. Wagner described successive promotions and a return to the top flight as objectives; those comments record the club’s ambition at that time, not a later league result or guarantee.

Proposed Sports Quarter
The same interview described a proposed 125-acre Sports Quarter in east Birmingham, with a 62,000-seat stadium, a 20,000-seat arena, a hotel and training facilities for the men’s, women’s and academy teams. Wagner said the aim was for the development to open by 2030. That date is a target, not a confirmed completion schedule.
BBC Sport reported that Wagner put intended private investment for the development at £2–3 billion. It separately reported £2.4 billion in UK government funding for local transport links. The figures refer to different sources and purposes: the transport funding should not be counted as private investment in the club’s project, or as money already spent on the Sports Quarter.

BBC Sport also reported in November 2025 that the owners had invested between £20 million and £25 million in stadium improvements and planned a new 62,000-seat ground as part of the wider regeneration proposal. That was a report of investment and plans at that date, not a current audited total or evidence that the proposed new stadium has been built.
Wagner described the proposed development as “an entertainment venue unlike many others in the world” in the 2025 interview. That is his characterization of the plan, not an independently verified comparison. The available sources report proposals and targets; they do not establish final approvals and financing for every component, completed construction or realized economic impact.

What is known about Wagner’s health and public role?
On 11 February 2026, BBC Sport reported Birmingham City’s announcement that Wagner had suffered a stroke, was recovering and would step back from daily responsibilities for a period. The club said he remained closely connected to the team and that operations would continue under its leadership group.
A 30 July 2026 update from Knighthead, distributed by Birmingham City, said Wagner was continuing to make strong progress in recovery and remained focused on it. The statement said he would miss the season-opening match and expected to attend a match in the near future. It also reaffirmed Knighthead’s commitment to the club and its long-term strategy. This statement does not establish a medical prognosis or confirm a later return.
