Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake a tech networking event useful by choosing one realistic outcome, starting conversations from the event’s shared context, and following up on a detail you actually discussed. You do not need to meet everyone—or leave with a job lead. A few thoughtful exchanges can help you learn about a field, meet peers, or understand a career path.
Decide what would make the event worthwhile
Choose an outcome within your control before you arrive. You might want to learn how a particular technical specialty works, compare career paths, meet people tackling a similar problem, or get a clearer picture of a company or role. Treat those as learning goals, not promises that the event will produce a job or partnership.
Check the agenda and identify a few relevant sessions, speakers, or organizations. If there is someone you hope to meet, review their public profile, organization page, or published work and prepare one question connected to it. Stanford Alumni Association recommends researching a person, role, organization, and industry before a planned career conversation; that preparation can help you ask something more specific than “What do you do?” Stanford Alumni Association career conversation guidance.
Prepare an introduction and a few questions
Make your introduction specific and brief
Prepare one or two sentences that say who you are, what work or technology interests you, and what brought you to the event. A concrete project or question is more useful than a broad label. For example: “I work on data pipelines at a healthcare startup, and I came to learn how other teams handle reliability at scale.” Adjust the detail to fit your experience; the point is to give the other person an easy opening to respond.

Stanford’s roughly 90-second guide is for a planned career conversation, not a required event-floor pitch. At a busy reception, a shorter introduction is usually easier to exchange naturally. Practice enough to feel comfortable, then let the conversation take its own direction. Stanford Alumni Association career conversation guidance.
Bring prompts, not a script
Prepare two or three open questions and listen for what merits a follow-up. For a scheduled informational discussion, Stanford suggests preparing five to seven questions and prioritizing them; that is more preparation than most quick event conversations need. Stanford Alumni Association career conversation guidance.
- “What brought you to this session?”
- “What are you working on in [technical area] right now?”
- “What does a typical day look like for you?”
- “What’s most rewarding or challenging about your work?”
The University of Illinois Chicago’s career guidance offers prompts about how someone heard about an event, their typical day, and what they find rewarding or challenging. Adapt the wording to the setting and ask because you are curious—not simply to move toward a favor. UIC Career Services networking guidance.

Start conversations from shared context
A session, speaker, demo, or technical problem gives you a natural opening. Try “What brought you to this session?” or “I liked your point about [specific issue]—how are you approaching that?” Then listen for one detail—a deployment challenge, project, research area, or career transition—and ask a genuine follow-up.
Keep the exchange reciprocal. Share your own experience or interests when they help answer the other person’s question or move the topic forward. Stanford also recommends being ready to explain your skills, interests, or values, and to answer “How can I help?” Stanford Alumni Association career conversation guidance.
If arriving feels awkward, consider coming a little early to get comfortable with the setting or attending with a friend. UIC suggests both as options; neither is a prerequisite for meeting people. UIC Career Services networking guidance.

Aim for a few meaningful exchanges, not a contact count
UIC suggests setting a realistic goal of three to five event connections. Use that only as a practical planning suggestion, not a universal benchmark or a measure of networking success. One conversation that answers a real question may be more useful to you than a stack of names. UIC Career Services networking guidance.
When a conversation has a natural next step, make it low-pressure: offer to send a relevant link, exchange contact details, or ask whether the person would be open to staying in touch. Don’t open by asking a stranger for a job or referral; UIC specifically cautions against that approach. UIC Career Services networking guidance.
When it is time to move on, thank the person, mention what you found useful, and ask whether follow-up would be welcome. A clear, warm close makes it easier to end a good conversation without abruptly disappearing. Record the context and follow up personally
Write a reminder while the conversation is fresh
Note the person’s name and role if known, where you met, what you discussed, a point of shared interest, and anything you promised to do. A short document is enough; you do not need a special app or device. In an article for the American Physical Society, STEM career expert Alaina G. Levine recommends recording the event and conversational context, and notes that a Google Doc can work. APS article by Alaina G. Levine on networking.
Choose a follow-up that fits the conversation
Send a note that reminds the person who you are and why you are writing. If they offered useful advice, thank them. If you promised a paper, résumé, or other resource, send it. If you have a specific question worth discussing, you can ask whether they would be open to a brief call. Levine’s article suggests short 15- or 20-minute conversations as a practical option, not as a universal rule or proven ideal duration. APS article by Alaina G. Levine on networking.
Match the channel to the relationship and the event. UCSF recommends email to thank someone for helpful advice; it describes LinkedIn as suitable for many entrepreneurship, business, industry-research, and science-communication contexts, while noting that email is usually better for faculty. UCSF Career & Professional Development follow-up guidance.

Hi [Name]—it was good meeting you at [event/session]. I enjoyed hearing about [specific project, question, or detail]. Your point about [detail] gave me a useful angle on [relevant topic]. As promised, here is [resource]. If it would be useful, I’d be glad to continue the conversation about [specific subject]. Either way, thanks for taking the time to talk.
Keep later contact useful and occasional
If a relevant reason comes up later, share a resource, congratulate them on work they have made public, or send a brief update. Levine suggests checking in within the year as one way to maintain a connection; it is not an obligation to keep messaging someone who has not replied. APS article by Alaina G. Levine on networking.
What networking can—and cannot—promise
Career-service guidance can offer practical ways to prepare, talk, and follow up, but it does not establish that a particular event tactic causes a job offer, referral, or partnership. The sources here are advice pages rather than outcome studies, so there is no reliable conversion rate for turning a tech-event conversation into a career result.
