The federal new-EV tax credit of up to $7,500 is no longer available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. Congress ended it through Public Law 119-21, commonly called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A narrow transition rule may still matter if you signed a written binding contract and made a payment by the deadline; placing an order alone was not enough.
Is the $7,500 EV tax credit still available?
No, not for a vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025. The IRS says the new clean vehicle, previously owned clean vehicle, and qualified commercial clean vehicle credits are not available for vehicles acquired after that date. The change was enacted in Public Law 119-21; the Congressional Research Service describes the law as repealing the clean-vehicle credits. IRS: Clean Vehicle Tax Credits; Congressional Research Service, IN12625
The familiar $7,500 figure was the maximum for the section 30D new clean vehicle credit, not a guaranteed discount for every electric vehicle or buyer. Under the historical rules, it consisted of two potential $3,750 components tied to battery requirements, alongside other vehicle and taxpayer eligibility rules. IRS Bulletin 2024-27
Who may qualify under the September 30, 2025 transition rule?
You may be able to claim the credit for a vehicle delivered later only if, on or before September 30, 2025, you both entered a written binding contract and made a payment. IRS guidance says a qualifying buyer could take possession after the cutoff and claim the credit when the vehicle was placed in service, if all other requirements were met. - Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
- Potentially covered: You had a written binding contract and made a payment by September 30, 2025, then took possession later.
- Not sufficient by itself: You placed an order, made a reservation, or paid without having a qualifying written binding contract by the deadline.
- Still required: The vehicle had to be placed in service, which the IRS describes as taking possession, and you needed to satisfy the applicable credit rules, including seller documentation and reporting requirements.
Because contract terms and tax circumstances differ, check the IRS guidance and the applicable tax-year instructions or consult a tax professional before claiming a credit.
What happened to the used and commercial vehicle credits?
The same September 30, 2025 acquisition cutoff applies to the previously owned clean vehicle credit and the qualified commercial clean vehicle credit. They had distinct eligibility rules and were separate from the new-car credit; neither remains available for vehicles acquired after the cutoff. IRS: Clean Vehicle Tax Credits

For the previously owned vehicle credit, it reported 28,180 recipients and an average credit of $3,392. Those figures describe past claims, not current availability. Congressional Research Service, IN12625
Is there still a federal tax credit for an EV charger?
The charger incentive was a separate credit, not a replacement for the vehicle purchase credit. The IRS says refueling property placed in service after June 30, 2026, is not eligible; that deadline has passed. IRS: Clean Vehicle Tax Credits

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
What to check before filing
- Find your signed purchase contract and proof of payment, and confirm both were in place by September 30, 2025, if you are relying on the transition rule.
- Confirm when you took possession of the vehicle and whether the seller provided the required documentation and reported the sale.
- Use IRS clean-vehicle guidance and tax-year forms to check vehicle and taxpayer requirements; do not treat the former $7,500 maximum as an automatic credit.
State, local, and utility incentives are separate from the ended federal credits and vary by location. Check with the relevant program administrator for current availability and eligibility.
