For a broad benchmark, Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking puts the BMW M2 first, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray/Grand Sport second, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata third—but its result reflects that publication’s priorities, not a universal winner. Below is a U.S. new-car shortlist with model years and starting prices kept distinct, plus a way to compare the real cost of owning each option.
How to choose a sports car under $100,000
Start with the car’s job, then compare the specific trim you can actually buy. A two-seat roadster, a compact coupe, and a high-power performance coupe may all fit beneath the same headline budget, but they do not offer the same space, comfort, pace, or day-to-day usefulness.
- Set an out-the-door ceiling. Starting MSRP is not a final transaction price. Account for destination, options, taxes, fees, dealer pricing, discounts, and local inventory before deciding a configuration is within budget.
- Choose a driving character. Power and acceleration are only part of the experience; steering, chassis response, braking, and weight can matter as much. Decide whether you want an engaging lightweight car or a more powerful coupe.
- Match the body style to your use. Check seat count, cargo needs, comfort, weather, and whether you prefer a coupe or roadster. Similar prices do not imply similar utility.
- Consider ownership routines. Fuel use, transmission preference, and comfort for regular trips should be part of the comparison, not afterthoughts.
Car and Driver says its 2026 ranking draws on roughly 200 data points spanning acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value, and enjoyment. That is the publication’s stated method, not an objective scorecard that settles every buyer’s choice. Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking and methodology

| Model | Starting price listed for 2026 | What to keep in mind |

| Subaru BRZ | $37,055 | A lower-priced coupe option in the ranking. |
| Toyota GR86 | $32,695 | The 2026 figure on Car and Driver’s ranking page; Toyota’s separate page lists a 2027 model-year price below. |
| BMW 2-Series | $43,550 | Listed by Car and Driver as a 2026 starting price. |
| BMW M4 | $83,550 | Listed by Car and Driver as a 2026 starting price, leaving less headroom beneath the cap for added costs or options. |
| Ford Mustang | $34,990 | Listed by Car and Driver as a 2026 starting price. |

Prices and ranking are not the same kind of evidence: the first eight figures and editorial positions come from Car and Driver’s ranking page, while Toyota’s GR Supra details come from Toyota. MotorTrend’s separate 2026 under-$100,000 list independently includes several of the same models and starting prices, but its order and category boundaries are its own. What the different price bands buy
Lower starting prices: Miata, GR86, BRZ, Mustang
The Miata, GR86, BRZ, and Mustang all have listed 2026 starting prices below $40,000 in Car and Driver’s comparison. That makes them useful starting points for shoppers who want to preserve more of the budget for fees, options, or other financial priorities. They are not interchangeable: the Miata is a roadster, while the GR86, BRZ, and Mustang are coupes with different size and performance propositions. Compare the actual trims and seating or cargo needs rather than selecting by price alone.

Middle of the range: 2-Series and GR Supra
The BMW 2-Series and Toyota GR Supra sit in the middle of this shortlist by listed starting price. Toyota lists the 2026 Supra at $58,300 base MSRP and describes an available 382-hp 3.0-liter turbo inline-six and adaptive variable suspension. These specifications can help identify the kind of performance package on offer, but they do not determine how a car will suit an individual’s comfort or daily-use needs. Toyota GR Supra model information
Higher starting prices: M2, Corvette, M4
The M2, Corvette Stingray, and M4 start at roughly $70,000 or more on Car and Driver’s 2026 page. Car and Driver’s ranking favors the M2 and Corvette near the top overall, while the M4’s listed start is the highest of these three. A ranking cannot tell you whether the added performance and equipment of a chosen trim justify its full local price; compare the particular car’s configuration, use, and quote.

Model-year details that are easy to mix up
Toyota GR86: 2026 and 2027 prices differ by source and model year
Car and Driver lists the 2026 GR86 at $32,695. Toyota’s page lists the 2027 GR86 at a $31,500 base MSRP and describes its 2.4-liter boxer engine at 228 hp. These are different model years and source figures, not two quotes for the same car. Toyota GR86 model information
Nissan Z: keep 2026 specifications separate from 2027 pricing
Nissan’s 2026 press kit says the Z is available in Sport, Performance, and NISMO grades. It states that the standard twin-turbo engine delivers 400 hp and 350 lb-ft and is paired with a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic. Nissan’s live specifications page renders 2027 pricing: Sport $44,480, Performance $54,480, and NISMO $67,260. Do not treat those 2027 prices as 2026 prices. Which car is the best fit?
Use editorial rankings as a shortlist, then make the final comparison around your priorities. Car and Driver’s 2026 order is M2, Corvette Stingray/Grand Sport, and Miata in its top three, based on a methodology that includes more than straight-line performance. MotorTrend publishes its own list and taxonomy, so its rankings should not be blended with Car and Driver’s into a single supposedly definitive order.
- For an editorially top-ranked all-rounder: consider the BMW M2, while checking whether its actual price and everyday compromises work for you.
- For a high-performance coupe: compare the Corvette’s specific trim and final quote with the M2 and other higher-priced choices.
- For a roadster: the MX-5 Miata is the shortlist’s roadster and ranks third in Car and Driver’s 2026 list; its two-seat format makes it a different practical choice from a coupe.
- For a lower starting price: begin with the Miata, GR86, BRZ, or Mustang, then assess trim, equipment, and total purchase cost.
- For a Toyota comparison: distinguish the Supra from the GR86, and confirm which model year is being quoted.
Before you buy: a budget check
- Choose the model year and trim. Do not compare a 2027 price with a 2026 specification or starting figure without labeling the difference.
- Build the configuration. Include the features and transmission you actually want; the base price may not represent that car.
- Request a written local quote. Ask the dealer to itemize destination, options, taxes, fees, discounts, and any dealer pricing so the total is clear.
- Check real inventory. Confirm that the quoted trim and model year are available in your area and that the offer is current.
- Compare practical fit. Review seats, cargo, comfort, fuel use, weather suitability, and transmission before treating two similarly priced cars as alternatives.
