There is no verified public figure for Tim Walz’s net worth. During the 2024 campaign, CBS News estimated it at $117,000 to $330,000 from a federal financial disclosure, while Forbes estimated just over $1 million after assigning values to pension benefits and making assumptions about unclear filing entries. Those are estimates made using different methods—not audited totals—and neither establishes Walz’s exact wealth today.
What were the 2024 estimates of Tim Walz’s net worth?
| Estimate | What it was based on | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| $117,000–$330,000 | CBS News’ 2024 estimate, based on a federal financial disclosure filed in August. | The filing reported assets in value bands; CBS noted that the value of a federal pension was not stated. CBS separately cited an outside analysis suggesting that pension could be worth as much as $800,000, but that was not a value reported on the filing. CBS News |
| Just over $1 million | Forbes’ 2024 estimate, which attributed nearly all of the household’s wealth to government pensions from state, federal and military service. | Forbes estimated pension present values and made assumptions about ambiguous filing entries, including treating one pension-plan/annuity entry as cash. It also discussed a roughly $100,000 governor-related retirement account, conditional on contributions. These are Forbes estimates and assumptions, not disclosed totals. Forbes |
The estimates should not be read as competing measurements of the same fully disclosed balance sheet. Their methods and treatment of retirement benefits differ, and the available filings do not provide a complete net-worth calculation.
Why do the estimates differ?
Public financial disclosures are not necessarily net-worth statements. They may list assets in broad value ranges, and defined-benefit pensions may not have a stated present value. Turning a pension promise into an estimated lump-sum value requires assumptions about factors such as the benefit, timing and valuation method.
Other methodological choices matter too: whether the estimate covers Walz alone or the household, how ambiguous plan entries are classified, and whether liabilities are known and subtracted. State and federal forms also have different reporting rules and periods. Forbes described assumptions it used where entries were unclear; CBS presented a filing-based range and discussed the unvalued federal pension separately. AFP’s fact check likewise explains why disclosure-based claims should be interpreted within the forms’ scope.

What do the disclosures actually show?
In the federal disclosure summarized by CBS, Walz reported a Minnesota State Retirement plan valued in the $100,001–$250,000 band, a health savings plan in the $2,002–$30,000 band, and a Wells Fargo account in the $15,001–$50,000 band. The filing did not state the value of the federal pension. The Minnesota Teachers’ Retirement Association pension was described as “not readily ascertainable,” with an eligible payment of about $1,111 per month. A monthly benefit is not the same thing as a disclosed lump-sum asset value.
The Minnesota public-official disclosure page reviewed was updated January 26, 2026. It lists the State of Minnesota as an income source and reports none in several categories, including securities, real property, business ownership and government-agency interests. It does not give a total net-worth figure or a complete household balance sheet, and its reportable-interest categories should not be mistaken for a valuation of all assets and pension benefits. AFP reported that Minnesota’s form required investment reporting above $10,000. A form’s “no securities” entry therefore should not be expanded into a claim that a complete personal balance sheet proves there were no assets. AFP also reported that the Walzes sold their Mankato home in 2019, and that his 2023 state form showed no securities or property. AFP
How do his career and income fit into the picture?
Walz worked as a public-school teacher and football coach, served in the U.S. House, and became Minnesota governor in 2019. The retirement plans associated with those public-service careers are central to the published estimates, but the filings do not directly value all of the pension benefits.

AFP reported combined taxable income for Tim and Gwen Walz of $254,832 in 2023 and $127,676 in 2022. These are household taxable-income figures for those tax years—not net worth and not a measure of current annual income. AFP also described a 2019 federal disclosure listing Minnesota pension assets in the $81,000–$215,000 range, a life-insurance plan worth up to $50,000 and a college savings plan worth up to $15,000.
In January 2026, The Associated Press reported that Walz continued to earn about $127,000 annually as Minnesota governor and listed pensions and other retirement plans as his main assets. That salary is an income figure reported at that time; it does not establish his net worth. The Associated Press

The latest state disclosure page reviewed is current through its January 26, 2026 update, but it is not a full household balance sheet and does not value all pension benefits. The 2024 estimates remain useful as dated estimates, not as a precise or current total. AFP’s fact check found that filing-based estimates were below $1 million and contradicted viral claims that Walz was worth hundreds of millions; the limits of the forms still mean that no single exact net-worth figure is established by these sources.
