A service may hold a bank deposit, a crypto asset, or both. FDIC insurance can protect qualifying deposits at an insured bank if that bank fails; it does not insure crypto assets. To compare protections, first identify the provider, the legal account type and exactly what asset the provider holds for you.
What “crypto banking” can mean
A crypto-related service may be offered by an exchange, a custodian, a bank, or a nonbank app working with a partner bank. Those arrangements are not interchangeable. A company’s relationship with a bank does not, by itself, make a customer’s crypto balance an insured bank deposit.
Before comparing services, establish whether you are looking at a deposit account or a crypto asset, which legal entity holds it, and who has custody or control. The service agreement governs important details such as access, withdrawals and what happens if the provider fails.
How the protections differ
| Question | Traditional bank deposit | Crypto-related service |
|---|---|---|
| What is held? | A deposit account, if the account and institution qualify. | A crypto asset, a bank deposit, or a combination; check the specific arrangement. |
| Can FDIC insurance apply? | It can apply to covered deposits held at an FDIC-insured bank, subject to applicable rules. | Crypto assets themselves are not FDIC-insured deposits. A bank relationship alone does not change that. |
| Who provides the service? | Confirm that the institution holding the deposit is FDIC-insured. | Identify whether the provider is a bank, exchange, custodian, nonbank intermediary, or a combination. |
| What governs access? | The account agreement and the bank’s procedures. | The custody arrangement and service agreement, including their terms for access, withdrawal and recovery. |
| What does regulatory status tell you? | It depends on the institution and product. | Some crypto-related activities are permissible for specified banks under applicable law and risk controls; permission is not a consumer guarantee. |
Is crypto FDIC-insured?
No. The FDIC says its insurance covers qualifying deposits held at insured banks in the event of a bank failure, not crypto assets or other non-deposit financial products. A crypto company may use a bank to hold some customer funds, but that does not mean the customer’s crypto balance is itself an insured deposit. Check what asset you hold and which entity holds it rather than relying on a general claim that a service is “banked” or has a banking partner.

What happens if a crypto exchange or service fails?
The outcome depends on the legal provider, the asset and the custody terms. The evidence available here does not establish a universal recovery outcome for customers when an exchange or other crypto service fails. Read the service agreement for how assets are held, whether the provider or a third party controls custody, and what the agreement says about withdrawal, access and recovery. Do not treat FDIC insurance as protection for crypto assets.
What U.S. regulators’ permissions do—and do not—mean
On March 7, 2025, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said Interpretive Letter 1183 reaffirmed that national banks and federal savings associations may, under applicable law, engage in crypto-asset custody, certain stablecoin activities and participation in independent node verification networks. The OCC also removed the prior supervisory nonobjection step for OCC-supervised institutions undertaking those activities. It said banks should apply strong risk controls to novel activities. This does not mean every bank offers these services, that a particular asset cannot lose value, or that crypto receives deposit insurance.

On July 14, 2025, the Federal Reserve, FDIC and OCC issued a statement on crypto-asset safekeeping. It says existing risk-management principles and applicable laws apply, and that it “does not create any new supervisory expectations.” The agencies also withdrew earlier joint statements on crypto risks in 2025: the OCC described its withdrawal in March, and the FDIC announced the interagency withdrawal in April. The January 2023 joint statement should therefore not be presented as current agency guidance.
A practical check before using either kind of service
- Identify the provider. Find the legal entity named in the account or service agreement. Do not assume an app, exchange or custodian is itself a bank.
- Name the asset. Determine whether the balance is a bank deposit, a crypto asset, or a mix. A displayed dollar value does not, by itself, establish that the balance is a deposit.
- Verify deposit status. If the service describes funds as bank deposits, identify the bank holding them and confirm that the account and funds qualify for FDIC insurance under applicable rules.
- Read the custody and access terms. Check who controls the assets and what the agreement says about withdrawals, access restrictions and recovery if the provider or an intermediary fails.
- Separate permission from protection. A bank’s legal ability to provide a crypto-related service is not insurance for the asset or a promise of recovery.
What can be compared—and what cannot be concluded here
The clearest comparison is about the asset held, the provider, deposit-insurance eligibility and the terms governing custody and access. The available primary sources do not establish comparative loss rates, universal transaction speeds or typical recovery outcomes. Those should not be treated as settled differences between crypto services and traditional bank deposits without evidence specific to the products and circumstances being compared.
