What Judges Look for in Digital Marketing, Design and Technology Awards

Award judges look for more than novelty: they assess the idea, how well it works in its medium, and whether credible evidence shows it met its objectives. Criteria and scoring vary by award and category.

Judges generally look for a distinctive idea that fits the problem, strong execution in its medium, and credible evidence of results. There is no universal awards scorecard: criteria and weights change by award and category, so entrants should shape each submission around the specific published rules rather than rely on a generic formula.

What judges assess across award categories

Across the published guidance reviewed for Cannes Lions, The Webby Awards, D&AD and The Drum Awards Festival, several themes recur. They are not interchangeable scoring criteria: each program defines and weights them differently.

  • Idea and relevance: The work should respond to a meaningful problem or audience insight with a distinctive concept. Cannes Lions Design emphasizes creativity and innovation in solving problems, engaging audiences, shaping brand identity and creating impact. Cannes Lions Creative Data asks whether data is essential to the creative concept and its measurable impact, rather than merely an accessory.
  • Execution and craft: Judges consider whether the idea was delivered effectively. Webby guidance asks whether an experience is seamless and implemented appropriately for its medium, without technical problems getting in the way. Its creative criteria also value work that is engaging, relevant, memorable and has a point of view.
  • Function and audience experience: For websites, Webby criteria include content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, innovation and overall experience. Cannes Lions Design includes digital design that helps a product function and be used, alongside brand and physical design work.
  • Results tied to objectives: Outcomes matter when they show that the work achieved what it set out to do. Cannes Design asks for verifiable proof of impact; Creative Data expects tangible results connected to objectives.
  • Context and evidence: An international jury may need context to understand the insight, market and significance of a result. A clear written entry or case film can make the work easier to assess, but presentation does not replace proof.
  • Meaningful innovation: Webby guidance considers whether an idea is meaningfully new, whether its technology works and whether it changes how technology may be used. Its criteria say AI should enhance creativity or usability, solve real problems and be applied with integrity.

Published scoring differs by award and category

The available published weights illustrate why a single formula would be misleading. Cannes Lions’ 2026 Design criteria assign 40% to idea, 40% to execution and 20% to results. That weighting applies to Design, not to every Lions category or other award.

Program and category Published criteria or process figure How to interpret it
Cannes Lions, 2026 Design Idea 40%; execution 40%; results 20%. Design-specific weighting; do not apply it to other categories or awards.
Cannes Lions, 2026 Creative Data Creative idea/data solution 20%; data-driven strategy 30%; use of data 30%; data-driven results 20%. Data has to contribute to the strategy and creative work, with results tied to objectives.
Cannes Lions judging-process guidance Around 10% of entries typically make the shortlist. A typical rate described by Cannes Lions, not a guaranteed annual outcome or an individual entrant’s odds.
The Webby Awards judging-process guidance Five nominees, including one winner, per category; Official Honoree status is capped at no more than 20% of entries. These are process caps, not a promise that any entry will be nominated or recognized.

The percentages and process figures above are specific to the programs and guidance named. They do not establish a common standard for judging digital marketing, design or technology work.

#1 Best Overall

Choose a category that matches the work

Category fit affects whether judges can assess a project against the right criteria. D&AD distinguishes digital marketing advertising from digital design: digital marketing covers campaigns and communications that primarily use technology, data and digital platforms; graphics, digital experiences and spaces fall under Digital Design. The Drum says its core criteria framework is interpreted and weighted differently by discipline and category.

Before entering, compare the category’s scope with what the project actually is—not just the channels it used. A campaign that happens to include a website is not automatically a digital-design project, and a digital experience is not automatically advertising. Check the current entry rules for eligibility dates, geography, category definitions and required evidence. For example, Cannes Lions’ 2026 Design rules specify an execution window of 6 February 2025 through 9 April 2026; those dates are for that award year only. Those rules also require Product Design work to be available for purchase.

Build an entry that makes the case easy to judge

  1. State the problem and audience insight. Explain who the work was for, what need or challenge it addressed, and why that context matters. Give enough market or audience detail for a jury to understand the stakes.
  2. Explain the idea and its relevance. Show what is distinctive about the response and how it follows from the insight. In a data-led category, clarify how data shaped the concept or experience rather than simply appearing in the process.
  3. Describe the execution in its medium. Make clear what people encountered and how the work functioned. For digital work, demonstrate that navigation, interaction and technical delivery supported the experience rather than obstructing it.
  4. Connect results to the original objective. Present outcomes that answer the stated goal, and explain why they matter. Where relevant, identify the baseline, measurement period, audience and market so judges can interpret the result.
  5. Make evidence verifiable. Support impact claims with credible documentation. Distinguish observed outcomes from claims about what caused them; do not imply causation that the evidence cannot establish.
  6. Use the written entry and film to clarify, not inflate. A concise narrative can help a jury follow the work and its evidence. Avoid letting polished presentation imply results or significance that the supporting material does not show.

Technology is a means, not the case for an award

Using a new tool or AI does not by itself establish innovation. The relevant questions are whether the technology solves a real problem, improves the experience or enables a meaningfully different idea—and whether it works as intended. Webby’s guidance specifically says AI should enhance creativity or usability, solve real problems and be applied with integrity.

This makes implementation part of the argument. A technically ambitious feature that fails in use can weaken the experience; a simpler approach may be more persuasive if it serves the audience and objective better.

Understand how judging processes vary

The Webby Awards says Associate Academy Members independently inspect entries and that each entry is evaluated by multiple members against category-specific criteria; Executive Academy members then assess shortlists and vote. Cannes Lions describes an initial jury review of the shortlist, selection of Bronze, Silver and Gold by a two-thirds majority, and a Grand Prix chosen from Gold winners. Cannes also describes conflict-of-interest exclusions and compulsory bias-awareness training.

These process differences are another reason to read the current rules for the exact program and category. Review who evaluates the work, how shortlists are handled and what evidence or entry materials are required; do not assume every jury uses the same sequence or decision method.
