To check whether notes or flashcards are accurate, first try to recall or explain the material without looking, then compare it with the instructor’s materials, assigned reading, or another authoritative source for your course. Correct errors and gaps, record where the corrected information came from, and ask your instructor or a tutor when course sources conflict or leave a question unresolved.
Why recall and fact-checking are separate
Answering a card from memory shows what you can retrieve; it does not prove that the answer is true. Retrieval practice can help you notice what you remember or have missed, while comparison with course material is what checks the content. The University of California, San Diego’s Department of Psychology says that more than 200 studies spanning over a century have demonstrated memory benefits from retrieval practice. That finding concerns memory, not whether any particular note or card is correct. UC San Diego, “Retrieval Practice”.
A practical accuracy check
- Choose a claim to check. Start with an unfamiliar fact, an absolute statement, a number or date, a formula, a causal explanation, or anything you cannot explain. These are useful ways to prioritize review, not a guarantee that other notes are error-free.
- Test yourself before looking. Hide the answer or close your notes. Explain the idea in your own words, answer the question, or solve the problem from memory. UC San Diego recommends setting course materials aside to recall what you learned, then returning to check your recall. UC San Diego, “Retrieval Practice”.
- Compare it with a course source. Use the relevant lecture slides or recording, assigned reading or textbook, handout, or instructor feedback. Check the source that covers the precise topic and conditions in the claim. Duke recommends creating practice tests from course material and checking retrieved information against those materials. Duke Academic Resource Center, “Retrieval Practice”.
- Label the result. Mark it accurate, inaccurate, incomplete, ambiguous, or unresolved. A correct but incomplete statement can still mislead when a condition or exception matters. If you cannot decide which label fits, keep the question open rather than treating uncertainty as confirmation.
- Correct the entry and record its source. Rewrite the note or card using the checked explanation. Add a page number, lecture, handout, or other reference so you can find the supporting material again. UNSW Sydney recommends recording source references and noting questions in study notes. UNSW Sydney, “Reading, research & note taking”.
- Resolve what remains unclear. Reread the relevant textbook section or ask the instructor or a tutor. The University of Arkansas recommends these approaches for confusing material and advises correcting notes after checking it. University of Arkansas Student Success, “Tips for Effective Study”.
- Revisit the corrected material later. Test yourself again in a later study session. The University of Delaware describes a sequence that includes checking recall against notes or slides and then making flashcards or gathering course questions; the University of Cincinnati also recommends reviewing over several days. These are examples, not a universally optimal schedule. University of Delaware, “Learning Strategies”; University of Cincinnati, “Study Skills for UC’s Online Students”.
How to check notes
Keep enough context to understand each claim later: the topic, relevant conditions, definitions, and where the information came from. A brief note that drops a condition may appear wrong or may become misleading when separated from the lecture or example it came from.
Do not delete a class point just because you cannot find it in a general textbook. Class notes may capture useful information that is not available elsewhere. Check the assigned materials and ask the instructor whether the difference matters for your course. UNSW Sydney, “Reading, research & note taking”.

How to check flashcards
Check both the prompt and the answer. A vague prompt can make a sound answer hard to judge; an answer that leaves out a necessary condition or exception can be misleading even if its main idea is right. Compare the answer with course material rather than using the card itself as proof.
Flashcards work well for recalling concepts and key ideas. If the course expects you to apply a method, solve a problem, or explain reasoning, add practice problems or longer written responses instead of relying on one-word answers. Duke recommends course-grounded flashcards and practice tests; McGill describes practice testing with short and long questions, including problems. Duke Academic Resource Center, “Retrieval Practice”; McGill University, “Study Tactics”.

Choose a source that fits the question
Use sources in this order as a practical default: instructor-provided explanations and feedback, the relevant assigned reading or textbook, and course slides, recordings, or handouts. The best source is the one that is authoritative for your class, addresses the exact topic and conditions, is current for the course, and resolves the uncertainty. An outside explanation may help you understand an idea, but check it against course expectations before changing a course note or answer.
If credible course sources appear to conflict, keep the point marked unresolved and ask the instructor or a tutor which explanation applies. Do not choose an answer simply because it sounds more familiar or appears on a flashcard.

Spacing helps practice, not verification
Spreading review across multiple sessions can help organize practice, but spacing does not establish that the underlying information is accurate. Verify a claim against course material when you create or correct it; later spaced reviews can help you retrieve that checked material. The University of Delaware and University of Cincinnati both describe spaced review as a study strategy, not a fact-checking method. University of Delaware, “Learning Strategies”; University of Cincinnati, “Study Skills for UC’s Online Students”.
