First check the card against Google’s current local support list and confirm it with the issuer; then compare the card’s terms against your spending and payment habits.
First, check whether the exact card works with Google Wallet where you live
Google says, “Your bank decides if its cards work with Google Wallet.” A bank or card network appearing on a support list does not prove that every card from that issuer is eligible. Check the list for your country, then confirm that the specific card you are considering can be added.

Check your phone before assuming contactless will work
For contactless payments, Google’s UK guidance says you need an Android phone with NFC. Check the phone you already own rather than treating this as a reason to buy another device. The cited requirement is from Google’s UK page, so check local guidance for your market.

Compare the cost of borrowing before you count rewards
If you might carry a balance, focus first on the purchase APR and any other APRs that could apply to your transactions. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains that APR is the price of using a card and that a card can have different rates for different transaction types or time periods. Check the offer and card agreement for promotional-rate end dates and the rate that follows.
The CFPB’s 2024 guide illustrates why a lower rate can matter: in a hypothetical example with a $3,000 balance and $100 monthly payments, the 18% APR scenario totals $1,015 in interest and takes 41 months to repay; the 15% APR scenario totals $783 and takes 38 months. The higher-rate scenario costs $232 more in that worked example. These are illustrative calculations, not typical consumer outcomes or current market statistics. Read the CFPB guide.

For a comparison of card costs and terms, see the CFPB’s credit-card guidance. If you usually pay your statement balance in full, rewards may matter more to your decision; if you may carry debt, do not let a rewards offer distract from borrowing costs.
Work out whether rewards are worth their fees to you
Estimate the value you can realistically earn and redeem based on your own spending, then compare it with the card’s annual fee. The CFPB recommends considering both the rewards you expect to receive and use and the annual fee. Examine the issuer’s current terms for the details that determine actual value:

Do not assume a card has particular earning categories or reward restrictions without checking its current offer and terms. The CFPB’s 2024 guide to finding a credit card recommends comparing offers before applying so you can find a card suited to your needs and avoid paying higher fees or interest rates than necessary.
Compare fees and read the current agreement
Alongside the annual fee, check for foreign-transaction, late-payment, cash-advance and other fees relevant to how you plan to use the card. A low annual fee alone does not establish that a card is inexpensive if other charges or borrowing rates matter to you.

Use the CFPB credit-card agreement database as a reference, but locate the agreement and pricing information for the actual issuer and current offer. The database contains issuer-submitted material and cautions that submissions can have discrepancies or omissions. Confirm important terms in the issuer’s own offer and agreement before applying.
Use a comparison checklist before applying
- Choose your market. Open the Google Wallet supported-payment-methods list for your country, not another country’s list.
- Confirm exact-card eligibility. Check that the issuer and specific card are supported, then verify with the issuer that you can apply and that the card can be added to Google Wallet.
- Check your device. For contactless use, verify that your existing Android phone has NFC.
- Write down borrowing costs. Compare purchase APR and other applicable APRs, including any promotional period, its end date and the subsequent rate.
- List relevant fees. Include annual, foreign-transaction, late-payment, cash-advance and other fees that could affect your use.
- Estimate usable rewards. Apply the earning rules to your real spending and account for caps, redemption conditions and annual fees.
- Read the current offer and agreement. Confirm the details with the issuer rather than relying only on a directory or summary page.
What Google Wallet support does—and does not—tell you
Google Wallet eligibility answers whether a particular card may work with the wallet in a particular market; it does not tell you whether the card is affordable, suitable for your credit profile or valuable for your spending. Nor does a supported-payment-methods listing mean Google recommends the card.
