Alabama fishing-license costs depend on whether you fish freshwater or saltwater, whether you qualify as a resident, and whether you buy an annual or short-term license. Alabama lists a resident freshwater license at $17. Annual saltwater licenses are listed at $30.05 for Alabama residents and $64.90 for most nonresidents, with different rates for Florida and Louisiana residents. Nonresident freshwater prices need special care: the state’s dedicated fee page conflicts with its 2026–2027 package pricing, so confirm the individual license amount in My Outdoor Alabama before paying.
Alabama fishing-license prices at a glance
These are amounts listed on Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources pages checked October 4, 2026. They are license fees, not necessarily the final checkout total; online or phone convenience charges may apply.
| License type | Alabama resident | Nonresident or special rate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freshwater, annual | $17 | $66.25 for most states; $70.55 for Louisiana residents; $75.42 for Mississippi residents | Alabama resident freshwater license page and nonresident freshwater license page. Nonresident page-listed figures conflict with 2026–2027 package pricing; verify the individual amount at checkout. |
| Freshwater, short trip | Not stated on the cited resident page | $37 for seven days | Nonresident freshwater license page; verify availability and final price in checkout. |
| Saltwater, annual | $30.05 | $64.90 for most states; $48.20 for Florida residents; $129.20 for Louisiana residents | State saltwater fee page, whose table says it was updated August 29, 2025; confirm the current amount in checkout. |
| Saltwater, seven-day trip | $12.35 | $35.65 for most states; $30.20 for Florida residents; $33.75 for Louisiana residents | State saltwater fee page, table updated August 29, 2025. A trip license lasts 168 consecutive hours from the selected start time. |
The saltwater fee page also lists pier, spearfishing, disabled, and reef-fish endorsement categories. Those options have their own eligibility or use rules; check the state page and checkout rather than assuming an annual license covers every activity. Freshwater and saltwater licenses are separate categories.
Freshwater license prices and the nonresident discrepancy
Alabama residents
The state’s resident freshwater page lists an annual license for $17. It says recreational licenses expire August 31. An Alabama resident may fish with hook and line from the bank in the county where they live without a license, provided they carry reasonable proof of residency. This is a limited bank-fishing exception, not a general exemption for all freshwater fishing.

Nonresidents
The dedicated state nonresident freshwater page lists an annual fee of $66.25 for residents of states other than Louisiana and Mississippi, $70.55 for Louisiana residents, and $75.42 for Mississippi residents. It also lists a $37 seven-day license. Reciprocal arrangements may affect rates for residents of Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, or Tennessee.
There is a published-price conflict: Alabama’s 2026–2027 package page lists an All Access Fishing package at $145 for “All Other States”, with components of $68.20 freshwater and $66.80 saltwater plus a reef-fish endorsement. That package is not the same product as an individual freshwater license, and the official pages reviewed do not explain why its freshwater component differs from the dedicated nonresident page’s figures. Do not combine the amounts as though they share scope or effective date. Select the individual license in My Outdoor Alabama and verify its displayed fee before purchase.

Saltwater license prices and covered activities
The state saltwater fee table labels itself updated August 29, 2025. Its annual and seven-day trip prices vary by residency as shown above, and the table predates the current 2026–2027 license season. Treat the listed rates as page-listed amounts and confirm the current price in checkout.
A saltwater license is required to fish for or possess fish in Alabama saltwater areas. Alabama also requires one for cast netting, flounder gigging, and recreational crab traps. A pier license is a separate listed category; fishing only from a pier does not mean that every saltwater activity is covered.

Who is exempt, and how Alabama determines residency
- Alabama residents age 65 and older: exempt from purchasing freshwater and saltwater fishing licenses. Saltwater Angler Registration or reef-fish endorsement rules may still apply.
- People under 16: residents and nonresidents are exempt from saltwater licensing. For freshwater, the state’s resident page describes age-related exemptions; check the applicable license page for the specific conditions.
- Nonresidents age 16 and older: need an appropriate recreational license. Alabama says nonresidents do not receive an over-65 exemption.
- Alabama residency: generally determined by an Alabama driver’s license or non-driver identification. Someone holding an out-of-state driver’s license is generally considered a nonresident, subject to stated exceptions for qualifying active-duty military personnel and eligible college students.
Some Alabama residents who do not need an annual saltwater license—including people 65 and older, lifetime license holders, and those fishing only from a pier with a pier license—must obtain the free Saltwater Angler Registration. Exemption from buying a license therefore does not automatically remove registration or endorsement requirements.
License duration and expiration
Alabama recreational licenses expire on August 31. A seven-day saltwater trip license is a separate timed period of 168 consecutive hours beginning at the start time selected. Confirm the dates and time shown during purchase so the short-term coverage matches your trip.

Where to buy and how to confirm the total
- Open Outdoor Alabama or go directly to My Outdoor Alabama, then use the licensing system to choose freshwater or saltwater, residency, duration, and any applicable endorsement.
- Review the exact individual license and the final amount in checkout. This is especially important for nonresident freshwater licenses because the dedicated fee page and 2026–2027 package page show different figures.
- If you do not buy online, Alabama lists local probate or license commissioner offices, license agents, Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries offices, the Montgomery office, and phone support at 1-888-848-6887. Ask whether a convenience charge applies to the chosen purchase method.
ADCNR announced that 2026–2027 licenses use the My Outdoor Alabama system, which is also accessible through the updated Outdoor AL app. The state’s platform information is available in its licensing-system announcement.
