What should your documents prove?
A useful submission connects the origin of the assets to the deposit. One document may establish both—for example, a bank statement that shows salary arriving and a later transfer used to buy crypto. If it does not, provide linked records that fill the gaps: an earnings document, the account receiving the earnings, the purchase or withdrawal record, and the deposit details where relevant. Kraken notes that an earning document may not prove receipt, in which case a separate bank or exchange statement may be needed. Kraken
A wallet balance screenshot can show that you hold crypto, but not necessarily how you acquired it. Wallet transaction history can help establish the path; the platform may also ask for evidence of the original purchase or other source. Coinbase

Choose records that reflect the actual origin of the deposit. These are examples from platform guidance, not a universal checklist.

Coinbase distinguishes documents for the means of transfer from documents for source of wealth, and its guidance for external-wallet crypto includes wallet activity and documentation identifying the original source. How to document common crypto transfer paths
From one exchange to another
Use the sending exchange’s statement or transaction record. It should help identify the account holder and show the relevant withdrawal or transfer and wallet address when available. Pair it with evidence of how the assets were acquired if the request asks for the original source, not only the transfer route. Coinbase

From a self-custody wallet
Provide a transaction statement, export, or clear activity screenshots showing the relevant flows, rather than only the current balance. If the wallet history does not establish how you obtained the crypto, attach the purchase, earnings, gift, mining, or other source records that apply. A crypto tax document or capital gains/losses report may support the explanation, but it does not replace evidence of the source or guarantee acceptance. From earnings, a gift, or an inheritance
Show the source and the receipt. For employment income, that might mean a payslip plus a bank statement; for a gift, a donor explanation or transfer document plus receipt evidence; for an inheritance, legal transfer paperwork plus records showing receipt. Add the subsequent purchase or transfer records if needed to connect the funds to the deposit.

Source of funds is not the same as source of wealth
Source of funds (SoF) concerns the money or assets behind a particular transaction. Source of wealth (SoW) explains how you accumulated your broader financial position. A platform may ask for either or both. A general account of wealth does not, by itself, show that the specific crypto deposited came from that wealth; include transaction-level evidence if the request concerns the particular deposit. How to prepare a clear submission
- Make your name or other requested account identifier visible, along with the issuing bank, employer, exchange, or service.
- Keep relevant dates, asset or currency, amounts, transaction details, and wallet addresses visible.
- Provide a coherent chain of records. If an account or wallet changed, explain the gap briefly and factually.
- Submit complete, legible statements or exports. Crypto.com asks for the full document and clear transaction details; Kraken has its own identity, date, and document conditions. Follow the receiving platform’s current instructions on time periods, redactions, and file formats. Crypto.com Kraken
- Do not assume that a portfolio display or balance screenshot proves profit or original source. Deribit cautions that a portfolio display without profit/source information may not qualify. Deribit
What if the platform asks for more?
Requirements vary, so use the receiving platform’s specific request rather than treating any example list as guaranteed acceptance criteria. Check whether the request is asking for the original source, receipt by you, the transfer path, wider source of wealth, or a combination. If a record proves only one link, add the missing record or ask the platform what evidence it will accept for that point. A request for documentation is not, by itself, evidence that you have done anything wrong; Kraken says requests may arise from country-specific legal requirements or a customer’s situation. Kraken
