Woolworths and Coles are more concentrated in food retail. That difference matters as much as headline sales or share prices when comparing the companies.
The latest comparable company results available here are for FY2026, while the WES and COL share-price snapshots are dated 2 October 2026. They are not enough to establish which share is cheaper or likely to deliver the best return.
How do the businesses differ?
Wesfarmers’ mix spans home improvement, discount department stores, chemicals and fertilisers, office supplies, health and industrial and safety operations. Its FY2026 results identify Bunnings Group, Kmart Group and WesCEF as its largest divisional contributors. Woolworths Group and Coles Group are more concentrated in retail food, though neither should be treated as a business with no other activities. Their results and presentations and FY2026 investor highlights are the primary places to check each company’s reporting scope.
This creates different earnings drivers and risks. Wesfarmers’ results reflect several kinds of retail and industrial activity; a supermarket-focused comparison is more directly relevant to Woolworths and Coles. A single group sales-growth or profit figure can obscure those differences, so consider the company’s mix before comparing performance.

What do the FY2026 figures show?
The reported figures provide a partial comparison, not a like-for-like ranking. Wesfarmers’ FY2026 results were released on 27 August 2026. Coles’ figures below are rounded highlights, and its EBIT excludes significant items. Woolworths’ official FY2026 announcement, presentation and annual report were listed as dated 26 August 2026, but the retrieved text did not expose matching revenue, EBIT, NPAT or dividend values.
| Measure | Wesfarmers | Coles | Woolworths |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue or sales revenue | A$47,274 million revenue; FY2026, year ended 30 June 2026 | A$45.6 billion group sales revenue; rounded FY2026 highlight | Not stated in the retrieved FY2026 results text; see results and presentations |
| EBIT | A$4,493 million group EBIT; FY2026 | A$2.3 billion group EBIT excluding significant items; rounded FY2026 highlight | Not stated in the retrieved FY2026 results text; see results and presentations |
| NPAT | A$2,874 million statutory NPAT; FY2026 | A$1.1 billion NPAT; rounded FY2026 highlight | Not stated in the retrieved FY2026 results text; see results and presentations |
| Ordinary dividend | 222 cents per share, fully franked; FY2026 | Not stated in the retrieved FY2026 highlights | Not stated in the retrieved FY2026 results text; see results and presentations |
Do not read the revenue or NPAT figures as proof that one company is more profitable or better value. Coles’ EBIT is explicitly excluding significant items; Wesfarmers’ number is reported group EBIT. Definitions, segment scope, fiscal periods and adjustments need to align before calculating or comparing margins and multiples.
Wesfarmers’ statutory and adjusted profit tell different stories
Wesfarmers’ statutory NPAT fell 1.8% year on year in FY2026, while NPAT excluding prior-year significant items increased 8.3%. The company reported no significant items in FY2026; FY2025 included items related to the Coregas sale, winding up a property structure and Catch transition costs. A growth comparison should therefore identify whether it uses statutory profit or excludes those prior-year items.
Wesfarmers’ major divisions are not all the same size
Wesfarmers reported the following FY2026 divisional revenue and earnings. Its segment-table earnings are presented after lease interest, so they are not interchangeable with group EBIT.

Other moving parts include Officeworks, Wesfarmers Health, Industrial and Safety, and the lithium business. Wesfarmers managing director Rob Scott said the company’s businesses focused on mitigating cost pressures through productivity initiatives and delivering more value, service and convenience; that is management’s description of its approach, not an independent assessment of performance.
Are Wesfarmers shares cheaper than Woolworths or Coles?
A share’s nominal price does not reveal whether it is cheap. The available market snapshots show WES at A$76.22 and COL at A$23.03 on 2 October 2026. These are dated prices, not valuation measures, and they do not form a complete three-company comparison: the retrieved Woolworths share-price tools did not expose a quote in the page text.

To assess relative valuation, compare measures such as price-to-earnings and enterprise value to EBIT using the same market date and aligned earnings definitions. A defensible comparison also needs cash-flow and balance-sheet evidence, not just share price or sales. The available figures do not provide synchronized valuation multiples or enough evidence to name the cheapest share.

Best Value
- Business mix and cyclicality: identify how much each company depends on food retail, home improvement, discount department stores and other activities, and what could affect demand in those businesses.
- Growth: compare revenue and like-for-like sales growth over the same period. Check that the measure and reporting scope match.
- Operating profitability: align EBIT definitions, fiscal periods and significant-item treatment before comparing margins. Keep segment earnings separate from group EBIT where the accounting presentation differs.
- Cash generation and funding: review cash flow, capital requirements and balance-sheet leverage in the latest annual reports. The headline figures above are not a substitute for these measures.
- Dividends: compare dividend per share, franking and payout sustainability. Wesfarmers reported 222 cents per share fully franked for FY2026; comparable figures for the other two companies are not established by the highlights and results text cited above.
- Valuation: calculate relevant multiples with prices from one market date and earnings or cash-flow measures defined on a consistent basis.
Wesfarmers’ investor centre, Woolworths’ ASX announcements and Coles’ investor page provide company materials to check for updated results and market information. Share prices move, so refresh price inputs close to the date of any valuation comparison.
What can this comparison establish?
It establishes that Wesfarmers has a broader business mix than Woolworths and Coles, and that its FY2026 reported revenue and profit figures differ in important ways from Coles’ rounded highlights and adjusted EBIT measure. It does not establish a synchronized valuation, an individualized fit for an investor, or which company will produce the strongest future return. Treat the comparison as a starting point for reviewing each company’s reports and your own risk tolerance, not personalized financial advice.
