To buy Fortescue shares, use a broker that provides access to ordinary shares listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Open and fund an account, search for Fortescue, then submit an order specifying how many shares you want and at what price. The broker sends your order to the market; it may not execute if it cannot be matched. ASX says payment is due within two days (T+2) after a trade is executed.
1. Choose a broker with ASX access
First confirm that the provider lets you trade ASX-listed shares. Australian investors can compare online brokers, full-service brokers and financial advisers. Online brokers generally let you place your own orders without recommendations; full-service providers may offer advice and related services. Those services and their fees vary, and an execution-only broker should not be treated as providing personal investment advice. ASX explains the distinction and advises investors to check providers’ services and charges: ASX: How to buy shares.
Before opening an account, check the broker’s supported markets and products, fees, account and funding requirements, available service or advice, and how it records shareholdings. Ask specifically whether your holdings will be CHESS-sponsored in your own name or held through an omnibus arrangement. ASIC MoneySmart warns that omnibus arrangements can mean the investor is not the legal owner of the shares and has fewer protections, including National Guarantee Fund claim protections. Read the account’s legal terms and ask how holdings and corporate actions are recorded: ASIC MoneySmart: HIN.
Non-Australian residents should check whether a broker or financial adviser in their country of residence offers trading in ASX-listed securities; access is not available through every provider. ASX’s guidance for international investors is at ASX: How to buy shares.
2. Open and fund the account
Complete the broker’s application and identity checks, then arrange the required funding method. Some providers require a separate cash-management account for transfers. ASX says account setup can take up to a week, although it is usually arranged within 24 hours; this is general guidance, not a service-time promise from any particular broker. Confirm the provider’s current process and allow time for approval and funds to clear.

3. Find Fortescue and place an order
In the broker’s trading platform, search for Fortescue’s ASX-listed ordinary shares. Check the company name, market and security details carefully before proceeding, particularly if the platform also lists other instruments connected with Fortescue.
Choose the number of shares and specify your order price or order type using the platform’s available options. ASX says orders generally match by price and then time priority. An order executes only if it is matched; entering a displayed price does not guarantee a fill at that price or guarantee that the order will trade at all. Once matched, the broker provides a trade confirmation. Check the confirmation for the quantity, execution details and any charges shown by your provider.

4. Pay for the trade and check the holding
ASX states that payment is due within two days (T+2) after execution. Follow your broker’s instructions for settlement and make sure the required funds are available by the deadline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a CHESS-sponsored holding, a Holder Identification Number (HIN) is associated with the broker-sponsored shares. ASIC MoneySmart describes a HIN as a unique number issued when someone becomes a broker’s client. ASX holding statements identify the sponsoring broker. Check your broker’s records and statements after settlement so you know how the holding is registered and who sponsors it.
5. Use the registry for shareholder administration
Fortescue names MUFG Corporate Markets as its share registry. Its Investor Centre is for managing an existing holding and shareholder communications; it does not place a market order for you. For registry information and current shareholder options, use Fortescue shareholder information.
Dividend Reinvestment Plan
Fortescue describes an optional Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRP). Registered shareholders with an Australian or New Zealand address are eligible; participation for holders without such an address is at the board’s discretion. A DRP concerns what happens to eligible dividends after you hold shares—it is not a way to buy shares in the market. Check Fortescue’s current terms before deciding whether to participate.
Other ways some international investors may access Fortescue
Fortescue says it has a Level 1 American Depositary Receipt (ADR) program trading on OTCQX. One depositary receipt represents two ASX-listed ordinary shares, and Citigroup is the named depositary bank. ADRs are distinct from buying ordinary shares directly on ASX. Ask your broker and the depositary about access, eligibility, costs and terms before considering this route; Fortescue’s information is at Fortescue shareholder information.

What buying shares does—and does not—protect you from
Fortescue shares can rise or fall in value, and an investor can lose money. Trading through an exchange or holding a HIN does not protect you against a falling share price or a poor investment decision. ASX notes that the National Guarantee Fund applies only in specific circumstances; it does not compensate for trading losses caused by market events or investment choices based on poor advice. Read current broker and issuer documents, and seek appropriately qualified advice if you need help assessing whether the investment suits your circumstances.

For context, Fortescue’s Investor Centre reports these historical FY26 results: 201.3 million tonnes of iron ore shipments, US$3.5 billion underlying net profit after tax, US$3.2 billion free cash flow, and a fully franked dividend of A$1.08 per share. These are issuer-reported results for FY26, not forecasts, live market data or, by themselves, a reason to buy. See Fortescue Investor Centre for issuer information.
