Teslas can retain meaningful resale value, but that does not make one a guaranteed investment. In iSeeCars’ 2026 five-year estimates, the Model 3 retained the most value among the Tesla models listed, at 46.4%; estimates for the Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S and Model X were lower. These are statistical estimates, not offers for a particular car. Whether a Tesla is worth buying depends on its actual price, how long you keep it, and what you can sell it for in your local market.
How much value will a Tesla lose in five years?
iSeeCars’ 2026 estimates put five-year depreciation for the listed Tesla models between 53.6% and 61.0%. The figures are based on statistical analysis of five-year depreciation from MSRP; they are not guaranteed resale proceeds. The study is U.S.-market oriented.

For context, iSeeCars’ 2026 study of more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold from March 2025 through February 2026 found average depreciation of 41.8% across vehicles and 57.2% for EVs. Model Y, Model X and Model S each lost more than the EV-segment average in that study. This broader result and the model-specific retention estimates use different comparisons, so they are best read as context rather than a single matched ranking.

Kelley Blue Book named the 2026 Model 3 its electric-car category winner in its 2026 Best Resale Value Awards. The award’s projections used 2026 model-year vehicles in KBB’s January/February 2026 Residual Value Guide. It supports the view that the Model 3 is a relatively strong resale prospect, but it is a projection, not a realized sale price. KBB’s statement that its overall top ten were projected to retain around 55% or more of MSRP after five years is not a Model 3-specific retention figure. Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 award announcement notes that “Many new-car buyers do not realize that depreciation often is the greatest expense incurred by drivers during the first five years of vehicle ownership.”
Why recent used Tesla prices do not settle the five-year question
Used Tesla asking prices recently moved upward in one iSeeCars analysis, even as its longer-horizon data show substantial EV depreciation. From September 2025 to January 2026, average listed prices for one- to five-year-old used Teslas rose from $30,040 to $31,329, a 4.3% increase. The comparison group of other used EVs fell from $24,629 to $23,738, a 3.6% decrease; Porsche Taycan listings were excluded from “all others.” These are average listing-price snapshots, not completed-sale proceeds for a particular vehicle.

The short-window price movement and five-year depreciation answer different questions: one describes a change in asking prices between two dates, while the other estimates how much value vehicles lose over a longer period. A recent rise is not evidence that a Tesla will appreciate during your ownership. iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer said: “When looking at new and used EV price shifts, it seems clear manufacturers and dealers are trying to offset the loss of the EV credits with lower prices on mainstream models.” iSeeCars’ market analysis provides the price comparison.
Is a Tesla resale value an investment?
Resale value can reduce the cost of owning a car, but the cited figures do not show that buying a Tesla is a financial investment or establish your total return. Retained value is only one part of the ownership calculation. Your result also depends on what you pay, how long you keep the car, mileage, condition, running costs, and the way you sell it.

Compare the exact vehicle’s out-of-pocket purchase price with a realistic, vehicle-specific resale estimate for your planned sale date. Avoid subtracting an estimated retention percentage from MSRP and treating the result as a guaranteed future price: the published percentages are model-level estimates, not matched quotes for your trim, location, and sale channel.

- Identify the exact car. Use its model year, model, trim, mileage, condition and location. The available national studies do not quantify how battery condition, mileage, region, trim or accident history changes resale value.
- Use current vehicle-specific valuations. Kelley Blue Book says its Fair Market Range and Fair Purchase Price for used cars draw on actual sales and adjust for local market conditions. These estimates can help frame value, but are not a binding offer. KBB’s vehicle-value explanation describes the inputs.
- Compare selling routes separately. Check local trade-in, private-party and dealer figures where available. Keep asking prices distinct from offers or completed sale proceeds; they measure different things.
- Match the estimate to your plan. Consider your expected ownership period and mileage, then compare the likely resale amount with the price you actually pay and your other ownership costs.
The cited sources do not provide matched trade-in, private-party and dealer quotes for every Tesla model or individual vehicle, so an aggregate percentage cannot answer “What is my Tesla worth?” by itself.

Include the tax-credit rules in a current purchase comparison
Federal new and previously owned clean-vehicle credits are unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The IRS says a qualifying vehicle acquired by that deadline may still qualify if other conditions are met and it is placed in service as required. For a purchase after the cutoff, do not count a federal clean-vehicle credit as reducing the price. Consult the IRS clean vehicle tax credit guidance for the applicable transition rules.
