What to Check in an ASX Mining Company’s Cash Position and Funding Plans

A practical guide to checking an ASX mining explorer's reported cash, outflows, funding runway, facilities and fundraising plans.

To assess whether an ASX-listed mining explorer can fund its stated work, start with its latest quarterly activities report and Appendix 5B, then check announcements made since quarter end. Read the reported cash, outgoings, estimated funding runway, financing facilities and each proposed funding source separately. The key question is not simply how much cash the company has, but how much funding is realistically available for the work it says it will do.

Start with the latest quarterly report and later announcements

For a mining exploration company, begin with its latest quarterly activities report and Appendix 5B, the ASX quarterly cash-flow report for mining and oil and gas exploration entities. The ASX says these reports inform the market about the entity’s recent activities, how they were financed and the effect on its cash position. ASX guidance on quarterly activities reports and the Appendix 5B form explain the reporting framework.

Note both the reporting period and filing date. Then review the company’s later ASX announcements: a quarter-end cash figure can be changed by a subsequent placement, debt drawdown, payment or other transaction. Treat the quarterly report as a dated snapshot, not a statement of the company’s current position.

Read the cash balance and cash outflows together

Reconcile cash on hand

Find cash and cash equivalents at quarter end. Check the supporting components—such as bank balances, call deposits and overdrafts—and see whether they reconcile with the cash-flow statement. Note the currency and units used; Appendix 5B reports figures in Australian dollars and thousands. A balance is easier to interpret when you know what it includes and whether any reported amounts are not immediately available for the company’s work.

Identify what used the cash

Review net cash from or used in operating activities and investing activities. For an explorer, inspect exploration and evaluation payments separately, along with relevant tenement and equipment spending. Compare the quarter with year-to-date figures and, where reported, the preceding quarter. Use the activities report to connect those costs to work completed and planned: a high outflow may reflect an active drilling program, while a lower one may reflect reduced or deferred activity.

Interpret Appendix 5B’s estimated funding runway

Appendix 5B reports total relevant outgoings, cash and cash equivalents, unused financing facilities, total available funding and estimated quarters of funding available. The form calculates estimated quarters by dividing total available funding by total relevant outgoings. If relevant outgoings are positive—that is, the entity had a net cash inflow—the form directs it to report the estimate as “N/A.” See the Appendix 5B form for the calculation and definitions.

That figure is a standardized snapshot based on reported outgoings, not a forecast or guarantee. Future cash use can change with drilling schedules, project decisions, contractor timing or cost reductions; new funding can change the available amount. Read the underlying outgoings and the company’s stated work program before treating a runway figure as meaningful.

Check whether financing facilities are genuinely usable

Do not treat a facility’s headline size as cash. Separate its total amount, amount drawn and unused amount, then read the facility details. Appendix 5B asks issuers to describe financing arrangements, including the lender, interest rate, maturity date and whether the facility is secured or unsecured. These terms help establish whether unused funds are available for the stated work and whether conditions, security or maturity could limit their usefulness. The ASX’s Appendix 5B form sets out the requested disclosures; the quarterly activities report guidance provides related context.

Classify every funding plan by status

Follow the quarterly report’s links to announcements about placements, entitlement offers, debt, asset sales, joint-venture contributions or other funding plans. For each one, record its amount, terms, approval conditions and expected settlement date, and classify it accurately:

  • Received: cash has been paid to the company.
  • Committed: a funding commitment has been made, but check whether it remains subject to conditions or completion.
  • Proposed: the transaction has been announced or is under consideration but is not completed.
  • Conditional: proceeds depend on specified approvals, milestones or other requirements.

Do not add proposed or conditional proceeds to cash already in the bank. If Appendix 5B estimates less than two quarters of funding, it asks the entity to describe steps taken or proposed to raise more cash and management’s view of their likelihood of success. That disclosure makes it particularly important to distinguish a possible source from a completed receipt.

Test funding against the work program and the two-quarter disclosure

Compare cash and realistically available funding with the scale and timing of the described work and near-term obligations. Look for changes such as deferred work, asset disposals or cost-management measures, and consider whether they preserve or alter the company’s stated objectives. A management statement of confidence is an outlook, not proof that funding has settled.

Appendix 5B’s version identified as 17 July 2020 sets a reporting trigger at estimated funding of less than two quarters. Below that threshold, the entity must address whether current net operating cash flows are expected to continue, what steps it has taken or proposes to take to raise further cash and how likely those steps are to succeed, and whether it expects to continue operations and meet its business objectives, and on what basis. This is a disclosure prompt for closer scrutiny—not, by itself, evidence of insolvency or that a fundraising plan will fail. The threshold and questions appear in the Appendix 5B form.

A historical example shows why these distinctions matter. Infinity Mining’s Appendix 5B for the quarter ended 30 June 2025 reported $321,000 in cash and described cost management and possible funding options, while stating that estimated outflows exceeded available cash over the next quarter. Its board expressed confidence in obtaining additional capital if required. Those were issuer-specific statements in a 2025 filing, not evidence of the company’s present funding position; confidence and possible options should not be confused with money received.

Compare companies on consistent terms

When assessing two or more explorers, use the same reporting period and compare the items below rather than ranking companies by cash balance alone. Project stage and activity affect spending, so equal balances do not imply equal funding adequacy.

What to compare What to check
Cash and cash equivalents Quarter-end amount, currency, units and reported components.
Cash outflows Operating and exploration/evaluation outflows, with relevant investing costs and period comparisons.
Estimated funding quarters The reported figure and the total relevant outgoings used in its calculation.
Unused facilities Available amount, lender, interest rate, maturity, security and any relevant conditions.
Other funding Amounts received versus committed, proposed or conditional proceeds.
Funding purpose The work program and near-term obligations the funding is meant to support.
