What AdSense does—and what it does not promise
Google AdSense lets eligible publishers earn revenue when ads are shown on their sites, including through clicks or impressions. The service is free to join, but the amount a site earns depends on factors that cannot be reduced to a guaranteed payment per click or a universal traffic-based forecast. Google does not promise that a particular site will be accepted or earn a specified amount.
Google’s published revenue shares describe how revenue is divided for specific products; they are not estimates of a publisher’s total income. For AdSense for Content, publishers receive 80% after the advertiser platform fee. In Google’s example where advertisers buy display ads on AdSense through Google Ads, publishers keep about 68% of revenue. AdSense for Search uses a different calculation: Google says publishers receive 51% of revenue recognized by Google. These figures have different calculation bases and should not be compared as if they were equivalent. Google also says a platform partner may take an additional share.
What you need before applying
- Age: The person applying must be at least 18.
- Original content: The site needs original, high-quality content that complies with Google’s policies.
- Site access: You generally need access to the site’s HTML to verify ownership and configure ads. Some CMS and host-partner arrangements offer supported alternate signup or setup routes.
- Policy compliance: The site as a whole—including user-generated content and other links or ads—must comply with applicable publisher policies.
Google’s eligibility guidance does not establish a universal minimum number of visitors. Do not treat a particular traffic threshold as an official prerequisite unless Google states one for your specific setup.

How to apply and set up AdSense
- Check eligibility and access. Confirm the applicant meets the age requirement, that the site has original policy-compliant content, and that you can verify and configure the site directly or through an eligible host-partner route.
- Review the whole site against policy. Check pages, comments or other user submissions, outbound links, and existing advertising. A compliant homepage does not make the rest of the site compliant.
- Add the site in AdSense. In your AdSense account, open the Sites workflow and add the site you want reviewed.
- Verify ownership using a supported method. One option, where appropriate, is placing the AdSense code snippet in the page’s
<head>. Follow the verification instructions shown for your account and setup. - Wait for Google’s review. Google says review usually takes a few days, though some cases take two to four weeks. That is a typical range, not a guaranteed deadline.
- Configure ad placements after approval. Choose formats and placements that are clear to visitors and comply with the ad-placement rules below.
- Check the terms for your products and partners. Confirm which AdSense products are active and whether a CMS, host, or other platform partner takes an additional share.
How much does AdSense pay?
There is no reliable fixed amount per click or universal earnings figure to infer from traffic alone in Google’s guidance. Your actual revenue depends on the ads served and the activity and revenue associated with them. Google’s revenue-share details are useful for understanding the product’s split, not for predicting what an individual site will earn.

Google says its stated revenue-share percentages are consistent across publisher geographies, and cautions that the percentage alone can be misleading: compare total revenue and any additional partner deductions, not just the headline share.
Ad placement rules that protect your account and visitors
Google prohibits asking for or incentivizing ad clicks, disguising ads as editorial material or navigation, and using misleading labels or images. Ads must not be placed in prohibited contexts such as pop-ups, pop-unders, or email messages. Keep ad units visually distinguishable from the site’s own content and make sure their placement does not encourage accidental clicks.

Publishers must follow Google Publisher Policies. Violations can lead to ad serving being disabled or an account being closed. Google also distinguishes a policy violation from a Publisher Restriction: some restricted content may receive fewer ads or none without that restriction alone constituting a policy violation. Check the applicable policy and restriction rules for the content on your site before placing ads.

What to check if ads are not serving
- Review status: A site still in review cannot be treated as approved; Google’s stated review period can extend to two to four weeks in some cases.
- Ownership verification: Confirm that the verification method shown in your AdSense account has been implemented correctly and that Google can access it.
- Policy status: Check for policy issues and restrictions in the account. A restriction can reduce or stop ad delivery even when it is not itself a policy violation.
- Partner terms: If you joined through a host or platform, check its setup requirements and whether it affects your revenue share.
Keep revenue-sharing arrangements within Google’s rules
Google says publishers may not distribute AdSense earnings to third parties without written permission. That includes arrangements that share revenue in exchange for services or traffic. If another party helps operate, promote, or supply traffic to your site, do not assume that a revenue split is permitted; check the applicable terms and obtain written permission where required.
