What is the difference between an extension and an app?
A browser extension works within a desktop browser and can surface comparisons or test coupons as you visit participating stores. A shopping app gathers retailers or product searches into a mobile interface; some apps use an in-app browser to handle shopping. As Honey puts it, “The extension goes with you to different stores whenever you’re on your computer. The app brings different stores to you in a single app whenever you’re on your phone.” That is a vendor’s description of its own workflow, not a rule that applies to every service.

Some providers offer both formats, so compare what each version actually does. For example, Honey describes coupon testing on supported shopping sites through its extension, while its app brings stores together and uses an in-app browser. Capital One Shopping says its desktop extension searches for lower prices on Amazon products and tests community-sourced coupon codes at other retailers; its app offers product search across partner retailers, promo codes, rewards, and deal alerts. The best fit also depends on whether you want a price-history chart, a price-drop alert, coupon testing, seller comparisons, rewards, or simply a way to search several retailers. Those features are not interchangeable: a coupon tool may not track prices over time, and a price alert does not establish that an offer is the best one available.

How to compare the tools that matter to you
- Retailer and product coverage: Check the supported stores and whether the tool matches the exact model, size, color, and condition. Honey says it compares major retailers and other merchants it trusts, but acknowledges that it can miss options and that comparison is unavailable for some products. Its reported coverage of 30,000+ sites refers to sites where it has coupon codes; it is not an independent count of successful discounts.
- Price history and alerts: Confirm that the service tracks the product you want, lets you set an alert, and sends notifications through a channel you will notice. A chart describes past prices; it does not predict when a price will fall.
- Coupon testing and rewards: Find out whether codes are tested automatically, whether rewards are offered, and what conditions apply. A displayed potential coupon or reward is not the same as a guaranteed reduction at checkout.
- Geography and device support: Check local app availability, browser compatibility, and feature parity. Honey lists app availability in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, India, and Spain, and says certain Droplist and Amazon functions are US-specific. Capital One Shopping says its full feature suite is for US addresses, with some functionality outside the US and increased functionality in Canada, the UK, and Australia. These vendor statements can change; verify current local availability.
- Permissions and data: Review the extension’s requested browser permissions and the app’s privacy terms before installing. Capital One Shopping says it monitors products viewed and purchased on ecommerce sites to provide notifications and update prices, and that its extension needs permission to interact with webpage data. That disclosure is specific to Capital One Shopping; do not assume another provider has the same practices.
Why a tracker’s “best price” may not be your best deal
A comparison card or price graph is a starting point, not a final checkout quote. CHOICE, an Australian consumer organization, cautions that tracker data can be outdated and that tools do not necessarily find the best deal. It also notes that services cover different retailers and that shipping or delivery fees and membership discounts are usually not included. Its reported examples of over 50,000 sellers for larger services such as Zyft and 250 sellers for smaller platforms such as Price Hipster appeared in a March 14, 2025 comparison; they are contextual figures from that article, not audited current counts or measures of accuracy. Before buying, compare the same item on the retailer’s own site and check the full terms:
- Match the product: Verify model, size, color, condition, and included accessories.
- Match the offer: Check that the seller, delivery region, and stock status are the same. On marketplaces, compare the actual seller rather than assuming listings are equivalent.
- Calculate the total: Add shipping and other fees, and check whether a displayed price requires a retailer membership or account-specific discount.
- Review the purchase terms: Compare return conditions and delivery timing alongside the price.
- Confirm at checkout: Use the retailer’s current checkout total as the decision point. Prices and availability can change after a tracker updates.
Honey says its Real Deal comparison weighs seller price, potential coupon savings, and the chance of PayPal Rewards points, while noting that its recommendation may not be best for every buyer. Its Amazon page describes comparisons among sellers and estimated shipping, but displayed prices are illustrative and discounts or availability vary. How to choose without assuming it will save money
Start with the retailer or product you actually want to track. If a tool does not cover it reliably, a polished chart or broad site-count claim will not help. Then choose the device and workflow that fit your shopping, and compare the specific features, permissions, and local availability of the available extension or app.
