Possibility Space closed on April 12, 2024, after its publishing partner and founder Jeff Strain agreed to cancel the studio’s unreleased game, Project Vonnegut. Strain linked the publisher’s decision to information he said current employees had shared with a Kotaku reporter, but the available reporting does not independently establish that alleged leaks caused the cancellation or the studio’s closure.
What happened to Possibility Space?
Possibility Space, a studio formed under Prytania Media in 2021, shut down before releasing its first game. Employees publicly reported the closure and job losses on April 12, 2024. Project Vonnegut was canceled and never shipped, so it is not a released game available to buy or play.
In an employee email reproduced by Kotaku’s April 12, 2024 report, founder Jeff Strain said the studio’s publishing partner had expressed low confidence in providing the additional resources needed to complete Vonnegut. He wrote that the two sides “mutually agreed to cancel Vonnegut.”
Why did the studio close?
Strain said he closed Possibility Space “as a result of the cancellation of the publishing relationship.” That is his stated explanation, not an independently confirmed account of the publisher’s motives or the sole cause of the closure.

What Strain said about the reporter’s questions
Strain’s email said that questions from Kotaku reporter Ethan Gach for a planned article about Prytania Media and the closure of Crop Circle Games included non-public details about Project Vonnegut, the publishing relationship, internal profit-and-loss discussions, and confidential company meetings. Strain said Gach had identified current employees as sources. These are claims in Strain’s email; the cited reporting does not independently establish who disclosed the information or why.
Strain said he flew to meet the publishing partner after learning about the questions and discussed their impact. According to his account, the partner expressed low confidence about investing more money to finish the game, and the parties then agreed to cancel it. PC Gamer’s April 13, 2024 follow-up noted that Strain’s letter gave no other reason for the cancellation but did not explicitly say that leaks themselves caused the joint decision.
The Kotaku article at issue concerned Prytania Media and the closure of Crop Circle Games; Insider Gaming reported on April 12, 2024 that the referenced Kotaku article had not yet been published. The sequence and Strain’s explanation do not, by themselves, prove that employee disclosures caused the publisher’s decision or Possibility Space’s shutdown.
What happened to employees?
Strain’s email set different scheduled separation dates by location. It said U.S. employees’ final employment day was April 12, 2024. For employees outside the U.S., April 12 would begin a notice period, with April 19 scheduled as the final employment date. The email said those employees had no work obligations after April 12.
The email said final pay and other required payments would be made according to employees’ work locations. It also said the company still needed to determine what severance it could offer after calculating obligations and completing the publisher termination details; it did not promise severance or state a final amount. The announced schedule does not establish how payroll was ultimately handled.
How many people lost their jobs?
Contemporaneous reporting did not provide an official total. Insider Gaming said there was no official word on the number of employees affected, so a verified headcount is not established by these reports.

Was the closure connected to later litigation?
Prytania Media and its owners, NetEase, and related parties later became involved in a separate business dispute. On September 10, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana remanded the matter to Louisiana state court. The federal order dismissed the remaining federal motions as moot and left any possible consideration of them to the state court. That procedural order does not establish the lawsuit’s allegations as facts, and the sources cited here do not establish the state-court case’s status as of October 4, 2026.
