Adobe’s latest reported FY2026 period, the first nine months through August 28, centers on buybacks and acquisition-related investment. The periods do not line up, so their reported totals should not be treated as a direct ranking of which company returns more cash.
What each company reported
The figures below come from company filings and releases. Microsoft’s amounts cover its fiscal year ended June 30, 2026; Adobe’s latest figures cover nine months ended August 28, 2026. Adobe’s materials cited here do not establish a current FY2026 dividend total.
| Cash-allocation item | Microsoft | Adobe |
|---|---|---|
| Dividends | $27.0 billion declared in FY2026, year ended June 30, 2026. Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K. | Current FY2026 total not stated in the cited Adobe filing. Adobe FY2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q. |
| Share repurchases | $16.7 billion in FY2026. Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K. | $6.820 billion in the first nine months of FY2026, ended August 28, 2026. Adobe FY2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q. |
| Cash used in investing activities | $139.5 billion in FY2026. This cash-flow measure is not synonymous with growth capital expenditure. Microsoft FY2026 Form 10-K. | $1.908 billion net cash used in investing activities in the first nine months of FY2026, ended August 28, 2026. Adobe FY2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q. |
Microsoft pairs substantial payouts with much higher investing cash use
For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, Microsoft repurchased $16.7 billion of stock and declared $27.0 billion in dividends. Its annual report also said $40.6 billion remained under its $60 billion repurchase program at year-end. That balance is authorization capacity, not a promise to spend the remaining amount.
Cash used in Microsoft’s investing activities reached $139.5 billion in FY2026, up $66.9 billion from FY2025. The company attributed the increase primarily to $51.4 billion more in additions to property and equipment and $22.2 billion more cash used in other investing, primarily to facilitate component purchases. Lower acquisition and investment-purchase outlays partly offset the rise. Because this is a cash-flow category that includes more than property and equipment, it should not be read as a clean measure of organic growth capex.

Microsoft describes continued cloud and AI infrastructure investment as part of its strategy. That is management’s characterization of its priorities; the cash-flow figures show where cash was reported as used, not whether those investments will earn attractive returns.
Adobe’s latest period shows buybacks and acquisition-led investing
Adobe generated $7.646 billion of operating cash flow in the first nine months of FY2026, ended August 28, 2026. Over that same period it used $6.814 billion in financing activities, which the company attributed primarily to share repurchases, and $1.908 billion net cash in investing activities. Adobe cited the Semrush acquisition, ongoing capital expenditures, and investment purchases net of maturities among the investing uses. These are nine-month figures and should not be compared as if they covered the same length of time as Microsoft’s full FY2026.

Adobe repurchased $6.820 billion of shares during those nine months. Its March 2024 authorization for $25 billion was fully used during the period. A further $25 billion authorization approved in April 2026 runs through April 30, 2030, with $24.55 billion still available under it at the period end. An authorization is board-approved capacity that management may use at its discretion; it is not a commitment to buy back that amount.
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen framed the company’s operating performance in its June 11, 2026 Q2 release: “Adobe delivered record revenue of $6.62 billion in Q2 reflecting strong AI-driven demand across our customer groups and we are raising our full-year fiscal 2026 revenue and non-GAAP EPS targets on the strength of that performance.” Adobe reported Q2 revenue of $6.62 billion, up 13% year over year, for the quarter ended May 29, 2026. The quotation is management’s account of demand and guidance, not independent evidence about future shareholder returns. Adobe Q2 FY2026 earnings release.

How to interpret the difference
- Payout mix: Microsoft’s reported FY2026 distributions include both dividends and repurchases. Adobe’s cited FY2026 filing period emphasizes repurchases; the absence of a dividend total in these materials does not establish that Adobe paid no dividends.
- Cash deployed versus capacity: Repurchase totals describe reported activity. Unused authorization balances are not cash already returned to shareholders.
- Investment composition: Microsoft’s investing cash use includes elevated property-and-equipment additions and component-related cash uses. Adobe identifies Semrush and other investment activity as well as ongoing capital expenditures.
- Cash generation: Adobe’s $7.646 billion operating cash flow is a nine-month number. It is not directly comparable to Microsoft’s $139.5 billion investing cash use, which is a different cash-flow category covering a full year.
- Share count and value: Gross repurchase dollars alone do not show whether buybacks offset employee share issuance, reduced the share count on net, or were made at attractive prices. Nor do payouts or investment spending alone establish future shareholder value.
