A sale badge, savings percentage, or crossed-out price by itself does not show that the offer is unusually low or the best price you can pay.
1. Confirm the exact item and version
Before comparing prices, match the manufacturer and model number, plus details such as size, storage, color, and included accessories. A different variant or bundle can have a different price history and may not be a fair comparison. The Federal Trade Commission’s comparison-shopping guidance likewise recommends noting the manufacturer or model and relevant item details.
2. Check Amazon’s price history
On an eligible Amazon product page, select the “Price history” link beside the price. Amazon also says you can ask Alexa Shopping questions such as “What’s the price history?” Review the longest available view—30, 90, or, where available, 365 days—and compare today’s price with the item’s usual range and earlier dips. Amazon describes this feature as a way to assess whether a Prime Day price is below what an item typically costs. Amazon’s feature information lists availability in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and India, and says 365-day insights were rolling out in the U.S., U.K., and India; availability may change.
Amazon’s 2026 article reported that more than 50 million customers had used price history and that the average customer checked it three times a month. Those are Amazon-reported usage figures, not evidence that a particular deal is good.

Questions you can ask
- “Has this item been on sale in the past 30 days?”
- “What’s the price history?”
- “Is this the lowest price recently?”
3. Read reference-price labels carefully
Amazon distinguishes a reference price from the product’s full price history. It says List Price, also called MSRP, is submitted by sellers, manufacturers, or suppliers and validated by Amazon. Amazon describes Typical or “Was” Price as the median price paid on Amazon during the preceding 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. It also says it works to offer deals at the lowest price in at least the past 30 days. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its own methods, not independent proof that every offer is worthwhile. Check the chart as well as any label. Amazon’s reference-price guidance explains the terms.
4. Compare the same model at other retailers
Search for the exact model and bundle elsewhere, then compare the amount you would actually pay—not just the listed item price. Include shipping, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees, and check conditions such as membership requirements or limited-time terms. The FTC advises shoppers to compare products and total costs; it also cautions that some comparison sites promote manufacturers’ products or rank sellers based on payments. Consider how a site presents its results rather than assuming its first listing is the best deal. FTC comparison-shopping guidance.

5. Set a target if you can wait
Amazon says shoppers can set a target price and receive a notification when an item reaches it. A third-party tracker such as CamelCamelCamel may offer another way to review price trends; TIME quoted budgeting expert Caroline Vencil recommending it for deciding whether to buy during Prime Day or wait for a later sale. Treat alerts and trackers as decision aids, not guarantees of the lowest price across all retailers.

If the current price is not meaningfully below the item’s recent range or a competitor’s total checkout price, waiting or buying elsewhere may make more sense. If it is a strong price for something you already want and have budgeted for, the historical comparison can support buying now. The useful question is not how large the advertised percentage looks; it is whether the exact item’s price and total cost work for you.
