The decision did not end every part of their relationship: Reuters reported that Stellantis would continue using AWS and Alexa would remain available in some vehicles.
What ended—and what did not
The wind-down applied to the companies’ joint development of SmartCockpit. It was not a complete break between Amazon and Stellantis. Reuters reported that the companies expected to keep working together on other initiatives, that Stellantis would continue relying on Amazon Web Services (AWS), and that Alexa would remain available in some Stellantis vehicles.

What SmartCockpit was meant to do
Amazon and Stellantis announced SmartCockpit on January 5, 2022, as a software collaboration for connected, personalized in-car experiences. The companies described a planned digital cabin with entertainment, Alexa voice assistance, navigation, vehicle maintenance, ecommerce marketplaces, and payments (Stellantis’ 2022 announcement).
The announcement projected that SmartCockpit would begin appearing in Stellantis vehicles globally in 2024 and said it was expected to reach millions of vehicles. Those were plans and projected scale, not confirmation that the platform launched or reached that number.

Why the companies said they were winding it down
Reuters reported on May 28, 2025, that the companies confirmed their joint SmartCockpit work was winding down by mutual decision. Their stated rationale was to let each team focus on solutions that provide value to shared customers and better align with their evolving strategies. Reuters said it could not determine a single cause for the decision (Reuters report republished by Yahoo Finance).
That leaves the public explanation at the level of strategic fit and customer value; the reported statement did not identify a specific technical, financial, or product-performance trigger.

How this fits Stellantis’ later software plans
Stellantis continued announcing software collaborations after the Amazon decision. On May 21, 2026, it announced expanded work with Applied Intuition supporting STLA Brain, building on existing SmartCockpit work with that company (Stellantis and Applied Intuition announcement). The same day, Stellantis announced an expanded Qualcomm relationship spanning cockpit, connectivity, and driver-assistance platforms (Stellantis and Qualcomm announcement).
These announcements show that Stellantis continued pursuing software and technology partnerships. They do not establish that Applied Intuition or Qualcomm directly replaced Amazon’s joint SmartCockpit work.
