Neither brand’s guidance establishes a universal size conversion between them, so try the model you plan to buy whenever possible.
Do Nike or adidas running shoes run bigger?
There is no reliable brand-wide answer. Nike and adidas both sell multiple running-shoe models, and their uppers and construction can feel different even when the size label is the same. Brand guidance does not establish a universal Nike-to-adidas size conversion.
Instead of choosing by logo or converting a size from one brand to the other, assess the exact model on your foot. adidas recommends room for the foot to expand in the toe box, support through the midfoot, and a secure heel without slipping. Nike’s India shoe-finder guidance offers about a thumb’s width between the big toe and the end of the shoe as a general check. Treat both as practical starting points, not a guarantee of fit. adidas fit guidance; Nike India fit guidance.
- Toe box: Check that your toes have room and are not pressed against the front or sides.
- Midfoot: Look for a secure hold that does not feel uncomfortably tight.
- Heel: Check that it stays in place rather than slipping as you walk or jog.
Try shoes with the socks you expect to run in, and assess fit while standing as well as moving. If the shoe feels wrong in one area, changing the size alone may not solve it; another model or upper shape may suit you better.

Which has more cushioning?
Neither brand is uniformly more cushioned. Nike groups its recommendations into maximum, responsive, and supportive cushioning; adidas offers different ride and cushioning choices across its running range. Labels such as “maximum” or “responsive” are each brand’s descriptions, not a standardized comparison between manufacturers.
Think of cushioning as a feel-and-use trade-off. adidas explains that less cushioning can provide more ground feel, while more cushioning may feel comfortable and offer energy return but can also make a shoe heavier and place the foot higher off the ground. The right amount depends on your comfort and the run you plan to do—not on a rule that more cushioning is always better. adidas’s running-shoe selection guide.

Match the shoe to your runs
Before comparing brands, identify the surfaces and sessions you run most. adidas advises considering surface, cushioning, and support; its guide distinguishes road shoes from trail shoes designed for traction and protection. Nike’s shoe finder separates road running, road racing, and trail running. Those categories are useful starting points, but the shoe’s actual design and fit should decide the match.
- Everyday road miles: Look for a comfortable fit and a ride you can tolerate over your regular distances.
- Tempo or faster training: Consider models described for speed work or fast daily running; decide whether their firmer or more responsive feel works for you.
- Road racing: Compare shoes intended for racing rather than assuming a daily trainer will serve the same purpose.
- Trail routes: Prioritize a shoe intended for trails, including appropriate traction and protection for the terrain.
Within Nike’s Japan shoe finder, current examples include Vomero 18 among cushioned recommendations, Pegasus 41 with ReactX foam, and Structure 25 as a stable ride. The finder organizes options by maximum, responsive, and supportive cushioning as well as road, road-racing, and trail use. These are regional, live recommendations that may change. Compare models, not brand reputations
Current product examples show why a brand-wide verdict is misleading: each range includes shoes described for different runs and preferences. adidas US lists the following on its daily-running page; the descriptions are adidas’s own positioning, not independent performance ratings.
| adidas model | How adidas positions it |
|---|---|
| Adizero Boston 13 | Speed training and tempo runs |
| EVO SL | Fast daily runs |
| Hyperboost Edge | Everyday and long runs |
| Supernova Rise 3 | Supportive casual runs |
The adidas US page also provides model descriptions covering fit or feel, midsole, weight, and distance. Check the live listing for details on the exact version you are considering: product ranges and descriptions can change. adidas US daily-running range.

For broader franchise context, adidas Australia describes Adizero as speed-oriented, Supernova as comfort- and support-oriented daily trainers, Adistar as maximum cushioning, and Ultraboost as balancing energy, comfort, and style. Some shoes are marketed with a guided or stable feel, while others offer a more neutral ride. Treat those descriptions as ways to narrow your options, not as a diagnosis. A pronation pattern by itself does not establish that you need a particular brand or model. If a shoe feels uncomfortable or unstable, try alternatives; for persistent concerns, seek advice from a qualified professional.

- The mesh upper offers a comfortable, breathable feel.
- The foam midsole delivers intuitive cushioning through comfort-focused rocker geometry.
- The outsole has an intuitive Nike design and flex grooves in the forefoot that create a comfortable and cushioned effect as you run.
- Touch points at the heel and tongue create a natural feel as you take the shoes on and off.

Model specifications can sharpen a comparison, but compare like with like and confirm the exact version and size basis:
- Drop is the difference between the cushioning height at the heel and forefoot.
- Stack height describes the midsole height underfoot.
- Weight can help distinguish models, but published figures are meaningful only when the size and measurement basis are comparable.
adidas’s guide gives general examples of drop, including about 10 mm as a “standard” drop and 7 or 9 mm for lower-drop shoes. Those are adidas’s general guidance, not a universal standard or a comparison of current Nike and adidas models. The guide also discusses stack height, but no complete, matched specification set for both brands is established here. Check each manufacturer’s current listing rather than inferring a brand-wide difference. adidas’s selection guide.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- Define the run: Note whether you mainly need an everyday road shoe, a faster training option, a race shoe, or a trail shoe.
- Try the exact models: Check toe room, midfoot hold, and heel security in each shoe; do not rely on cross-brand size conversion.
- Compare ride feel: Decide whether you prefer a softer, more cushioned sensation or more ground feel, and notice whether the shoe feels too heavy or high for your preference.
- Check support and specs: Consider how stable and comfortable the shoe feels, then compare model-specific drop, stack, and weight where available.
- Choose by comfort and purpose: Pick the model that fits securely and suits the sessions and surfaces you actually run.
