Kingfisher Airlines stopped flying in 2012 after financial strain and employee unrest disrupted its operations. Flights were suspended from 30 September during an employee strike; the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) suspended the airline’s operating licence on 20 October, and its Air Operator Permit was not renewed at the end of the year. These were separate steps, not one shutdown order.
When did Kingfisher Airlines stop flying?
Kingfisher began operations in May 2005. It acquired Deccan Airways on 1 April 2008, expanding the business before its later financial and operational difficulties.
The airline’s final shutdown unfolded in stages:

The strike-related halt therefore preceded the regulator’s licence action, and the permit non-renewal came later. The Government of India’s DGCA notice records the suspension of operations and the regulator’s stated concerns. The High Court judgment provides a retrospective account of the airline’s history and licence suspension, while The Indian Express timeline reports the December permit decision.
Why did Kingfisher Airlines shut down?
The available evidence points to interacting financial, workforce and operational pressures rather than one proven cause. A debt restructuring and further financing efforts had taken place before the 2012 shutdown, but they did not prevent an employee strike from halting operations. The DGCA then stated that the airline had failed to establish a safe, efficient and reliable service. Its wording is the regulator’s basis in the notice, not a court finding that one particular factor alone caused the collapse.

Financial strain and restructuring
On 21 December 2010, a restructuring converted 30% of the banks’ debt into equity and extended the repayment schedule. The High Court judgment also records a further ₹1,158 crore infused during 2011. These figures describe specific restructuring and financing events; they are not a total for Kingfisher’s debt or a measure of later recoveries.
Employee unrest and operational problems
By September 2012, an employee strike had led to the suspension of operations. The regulator’s notice later cited the airline’s failure to establish a safe, efficient and reliable service. Together, these developments show why the shutdown cannot be reduced to a single event: the workforce stoppage had already grounded operations when the DGCA took licensing action.
