How to Set a Default Card and Payment Address in Apple Pay or Google Pay

Apple Pay separates transaction shipping and contact defaults from each card’s billing address. Google Wallet’s default card controls tap-to-pay payments.

To change the default Apple Pay card on iPhone, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults > Transaction Defaults. To change the default Google Pay card for contactless payments, open that card in Google Wallet and choose Details > Make default for tap to pay. Apple keeps billing address settings on each card, while Google’s documented address details are billing information used when setting up a card—not a universal wallet shipping-address default.

Apple Pay defaults on iPhone: card, shipping address and contact details

Apple’s transaction defaults let you choose the card, shipping address, email address and phone number used for Apple Pay transactions. These are separate from a card’s billing address.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Apple Pay Defaults.
  4. Under Transaction Defaults, select the default card, shipping address, email address or phone number you want to use.

Apple documents these controls in its iPhone Wallet & Apple Pay settings guide. Shipping and contact defaults apply to transaction information; they do not change the billing address saved to an individual payment card.

Change an Apple Pay card’s billing address

Billing address is managed from the relevant card in Wallet, rather than from the iPhone’s transaction-default controls.

  1. Open Wallet and tap the payment card.
  2. Tap More, then Card Details.
  3. Tap Billing Address.
  4. Select the address to use for that card, or tap Enter New Billing Address.

Apple says billing, shipping and contact information entered for a card can be stored for Apple Pay, and some merchants may let you update details during app or online checkout. The current Card Details path may differ on iOS or iPadOS 15 and earlier. See Apple’s Apple Pay information instructions and instructions for changing or removing Apple Pay cards.

Set the Google Pay default card for tap to pay

Google’s current help pages call the app Google Wallet. In this context, the default payment method means the card used for contactless tap-to-pay transactions, not a universal default for every online or in-app checkout.

  1. Open Google Wallet and swipe to the card you want to use.
  2. Tap the card.
  3. At the bottom, tap Details.
  4. Tap Make default for tap to pay. Wording may vary slightly by language or region.

Google says the first payment method added becomes the initial contactless default. You can still choose another card for a particular tap by opening that card before paying. A store or private-label credit card can be the default only if it is the only card added. See Google Wallet’s default payment method instructions.

What “payment address” means in Google Wallet

Google’s documented card setup process asks for the name, CVC and billing address associated with the card; those details should match the information the bank has on file. The cited Google instructions cover the contactless default card, not an Apple-style global shipping-address default. For card setup details, see Google’s instructions for adding a debit or credit card.

If setup fails because of an address or card detail, compare the billing information with the bank’s records. Also check that both the card and its issuer support Google Wallet: a physical card’s contactless capability alone does not establish Google Wallet compatibility.

Other devices use different settings

The iPhone and Android phone paths above do not apply unchanged to every device. Apple’s settings guide provides device-specific instructions for Apple Pay:

If Google Wallet still will not tap to pay

Changing the default card does not by itself enable contactless payments. Google lists these prerequisites for paying with a phone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • NFC is turned on.
  • Google Wallet is selected as the phone’s default NFC wallet app.
  • The card and country are supported for contactless payments.
  • The phone has a screen lock and meets Google’s security requirements.

A suspended card or one that has not completed setup may require issuer verification or help from the bank. Google’s tap-to-pay guidance covers setup and device requirements.

If the wrong card was charged, check which card is marked as the contactless default in Wallet; Google says that is the card used at tap-to-pay terminals. If the default card is declined, contact the bank about the account. If the bank finds no account issue, contact the retailer.

Which setting should you change?

What you want to change Where to change it What it affects
Apple Pay default card on iPhone Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults > Transaction Defaults Apple Pay transaction default card
Apple Pay shipping address, email or phone on iPhone Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Pay Defaults > Transaction Defaults Transaction shipping and contact details

Menu names and availability can vary by operating-system version, region, hardware, language, card and issuer. Apple notes that features may depend on market, language, hardware and software; Google requires a supported country, card and device.
