BYD Has Passed Tesla in Global EV Sales: How the Crossover Happened

BYD passed Tesla in the cited passenger BEV sales comparison in 2025, and the lead continued through Q3 2026. Here’s what the numbers show—and what they don’t.

BYD has moved ahead of Tesla in global passenger battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales. A compilation of company-reported figures puts BYD at 2,256,714 passenger BEVs sold in 2025, versus Tesla’s 1,636,129 vehicle deliveries. The gap remained in the latest quarter available as of October 4, 2026: BYD sold 762,478 passenger BEVs in Q3, while Tesla reported 486,532 passenger-vehicle deliveries.

That is a sales-volume result, not a verdict on which company is more profitable, valuable, or financially stronger. Understanding the crossover means separating BEVs from plug-in hybrids, comparing the same periods, and distinguishing BYD’s company-wide new-energy vehicle totals from its passenger-car BEV sales.

Did BYD outsell Tesla?

Yes, on the measure of passenger BEV sales versus Tesla vehicle deliveries in the cited company-report compilation. In 2024, BYD was slightly behind: it recorded 1,764,992 passenger BEVs against Tesla’s 1,789,226 deliveries. In 2025, BYD’s count rose 27.86% to 2,256,714, while Tesla deliveries fell 8.56% to 1,636,129. These figures are compiled from company reports by CnEVPost, rather than drawn from a single shared reporting system.

The lead continued in Q3 2026. CnEVPost’s October 2 comparison puts BYD passenger BEV sales at 762,478 for the quarter, up 30.89% year over year, and at 1,629,957 for January through September. Tesla’s official Q3 release reports 486,532 deliveries for the quarter; CnEVPost’s comparison gives Tesla 1,324,681 deliveries year to date. These are interim figures, not a full-year 2026 result.

The measures are close, but not identically labeled: BYD’s figure is passenger BEV sales, while Tesla reports vehicle deliveries. Tesla says its production and delivery numbers represent passenger vehicles sold to customers, and cautions that deliveries alone should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial performance.

What counts as an electric vehicle in these comparisons?

A BEV runs only on an electric battery and motor. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) combines electric drive with a combustion engine. China’s new-energy vehicle (NEV) category includes BEVs and PHEVs; BYD’s broader totals can also include commercial vehicles.

  • High hardness, wear resistance, impact resistance, and bumpy impact resistance in complex road conditions.

  • Strong durability, sensitive response, firm installation and no need for frequent cleaning.
  • Optimize the seal design, and reduce sediment and rain from entering the interior during daily driving.

That distinction matters because BYD reported 4.6 million NEV sales in 2025. It is a useful measure of BYD’s wider business, but it is not a fair substitute for its passenger BEV count in a BEV-only comparison with Tesla. Similarly, the International Energy Agency’s global “electric car” totals include both BEVs and PHEVs, so they are not a BEV-only denominator.

How did BYD move ahead?

It sells both battery-only cars and plug-in hybrids

BYD competes across two powertrains: BEVs and PHEVs. That gives it products for customers who want an electric drive but are not ready to rely entirely on battery charging. The broader portfolio helps explain the scale of BYD’s overall vehicle business, but only its BEVs belong in a direct BEV-sales comparison.

It built a large business in the world’s biggest electric-car market

The IEA reports that more than 20 million electric cars were sold globally in 2025, 20% more than in 2024, and that electric cars represented 25% of the overall car market. China accounted for more than 13 million electric-car sales—six out of every ten worldwide. Because China is so large in this category, strength there matters to global rankings. The available figures do not establish how much of BYD’s lead came from any one country or factor.

It has expanded beyond China

BYD reported that its NEVs had reached more than 120 countries and regions as of April 2026, and that overseas sales exceeded one million in 2025. Those are company-reported figures. Geographic presence and overseas sales indicate reach, but do not by themselves show market share or profitability in any particular country.

  • Small in size and light in weight, does not occupy too much space and does not affect the overall counterweight of the vehicle.
  • Durable and easy to maintain, wear-resistant, reduce running friction, reduce wear and prolong service life.
  • Firmly installed design, no shaking and abnormal noise during driving, and novices can try to operate.

Its technology and battery platform are part of the company’s strategy

BYD identifies the Blade Battery and its dual-mode hybrid technology as core developments. Those descriptions establish the technologies BYD emphasizes; they do not, on their own, demonstrate independently verified advantages in safety, range, charging, or cost compared with Tesla or other manufacturers.

The companies had different sales trajectories in 2025

BYD’s passenger BEV count rose in 2025 while Tesla’s deliveries declined. Tesla’s 2025 Form 10-K reported automotive sales revenue down 9%, citing approximately 8% fewer cash deliveries and a lower average selling price per unit. That filing provides business context for Tesla’s year, but it does not establish a complete cause of the change in sales ranking or a direct comparison of the two companies’ financial performance.

BYD vs. Tesla: what the available measures show

Comparison What the figures show What they do not establish
Passenger BEV volume BYD was ahead in 2025, Q3 2026, and January through September 2026 in the cited company-report compilation. The labels differ: BYD passenger BEV sales are compared with Tesla deliveries.
Broader NEV volume BYD reported 4.6 million NEVs sold in 2025. This is not a like-for-like BEV comparison with Tesla because it includes PHEVs and can include commercial vehicles.
Market backdrop Global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025; China accounted for six in ten. The IEA’s electric-car category includes BEVs and PHEVs.
Geographic reach BYD reported presence in more than 120 countries and regions as of April 2026. Presence does not establish sales share or profitability in those markets.
Financial performance Tesla reported 2025 automotive sales revenue down 9%. This is not a head-to-head profit comparison and does not explain the ranking by itself.

What the crossover means—and what it does not

For readers tracking the global EV market, the central change is straightforward: BYD has passed Tesla in the cited passenger BEV volume comparison, after trailing in 2024. The latest available 2026 figures show the same order through Q3, but do not determine the full-year outcome.

Sales volume is only one lens on an automaker. These figures alone cannot answer which company earns more per car, has the stronger balance sheet, or offers a better investment. Nor do they prove that a single strategy—pricing, technology, international expansion, or product mix—caused the crossover. The substantiated explanation is a combination of BYD’s broader product portfolio, its scale in a rapidly growing market, and divergent 2025 sales trends; the evidence here does not isolate the contribution of each.
