The right choice depends on the item, local stock, whether you need pool-specific advice or service, and the total cost after delivery or pickup. Check availability and compare the exact product and package size before you travel or order.
Which places sell pool supplies?
Pool supplies are sold through several channels, but they do not offer the same combination of product range, help, convenience, and services. Leslie’s, Inc.’s 2025 annual report describes a fragmented U.S. market that includes local independents, home improvement stores, mass-market and club retailers, online marketplaces, and wholesalers. Those are the company’s descriptions of the market, not an independent audit of every retailer.
| Where to shop | What it may suit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local independent pool store or specialty chain | Pool-specific questions, water testing or service where offered, and products beyond basic seasonal stock. | Confirm the location offers the service you need and has the item in stock. |
| Home improvement store | Common chemicals, test kits, cleaning supplies, equipment, and possible local pickup. | Catalog listings do not guarantee stock at a particular store; check local availability. |
| Mass-market or club retailer | Convenient purchases when the relevant pool products are stocked. | Selection may be limited or seasonal. Confirm that the chain carries the specific item. |
| Online pool retailer or marketplace | Comparing pool-specific products and broader online listings. | Check the seller, shipping cost and timing, product delivery restrictions, and installation needs. |
| Wholesale distributor | Supplying retailers and pool professionals. | Do not assume a distributor sells directly to walk-in consumers. |
When does a local pool store make sense?
A nearby specialty store is worth checking when you need a product that is less common, want to ask pool-specific questions, or are looking for water testing, service, or repair. These offerings vary by business and location, so call ahead rather than assuming a store provides them. Leslie’s describes its own business as combining supplies, service, repair, water testing, and pool-care expertise; that company description does not establish that every specialty store offers the same services.
Specialty chains are not equally accessible everywhere. Leslie’s says its stores are concentrated mainly in Sunbelt states, including California, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. Its 2025 annual report describes that footprint as the company’s own strategy, not a measure of the availability of all pool stores.

What can you buy at a home improvement store?
Home Depot’s pool-supplies category lists test kits, chemicals, cleaners, vacuums, skimmers, chlorinators, filters, pumps, heaters, liners, floats, and ladders. Its category page also provides a way to check pool supplies near a store. Treat the catalog as a list of product types the retailer carries, not proof that a specific item is on the shelf locally.
Home improvement retailers can be convenient for common supplies and local pickup. Leslie’s 2025 annual report characterizes this channel as generally seasonal, with a narrower assortment and less pool-care expertise or service than specialty retailers. That is the company’s competitive description; actual selection and help can vary by store.

Are big-box stores and online retailers good for pool supplies?
Mass-market and club retailers
Walmart and Costco are among the mass-market and club retailers Leslie’s identifies in its market overview. Their pool selection may be convenient when the product you need is available, but it can be limited or seasonal. Check the specific product listing or local store rather than assuming a chain stocks a particular chemical, kit, or replacement part.
Online pool retailers and marketplaces
Online pool retailers and marketplaces can make it easier to compare listings across sellers. Leslie’s describes marketplaces as offering a range of brands but not the pool-care services and expertise of specialty providers. Before ordering, confirm who sells and ships the item, the delivery estimate, shipping charges, and any product-specific shipping restrictions. Chemicals may have hazardous-material shipping limits, and some equipment may require professional installation.

Wholesale distributors
Wholesalers primarily supply retailers and professionals, according to Leslie’s market description. They are not necessarily a direct-to-consumer option, so confirm whether a distributor serves household customers before making a trip.
How to compare the total cost before buying
There is no established nationwide price winner among these channels. Prices depend on the exact product, formulation or concentration, package size, brand, season, location, and delivery charges. Compare equivalent products and calculate the total cost after shipping or pickup; a lower listed price may not be cheaper once those differences are included.

- Compare the full purchase cost. Include delivery, freight, pickup, and any installation costs that apply to the item.
Where to buy a pool water test kit
Pool test kits are listed in Home Depot’s pool-supplies category, and they may also be available from specialty stores and online sellers. A kit helps measure pool-water parameters; compare which parameters it tests and what testing materials are included. No particular kit has been evaluated here, so the category listing is not a recommendation for a specific model.
What pool-service businesses’ buying habits show
Skimmer’s State of Pool Service 2025 report says surveyed pool-service businesses used multiple purchasing channels: 79% bought parts and supplies in person at a local distributor, 53% used delivery from a local distributor, 30% bought from online pool retailers, and 41% bought from online non-pool retailers, including Amazon and big-box retailers. These are selections by pool-service-business respondents, not market shares or a representative survey of household pool owners; the percentages exceed 100% because respondents could use more than one channel.
