In the U.S., a lower price appearing after you buy a ticket does not by itself entitle you to a refund of the difference. You may still be able to change the ticket, cancel for a credit, or cancel and rebook, depending on the airline, ticket seller, timing, and fare rules. Compare the actual savings with any fees or ticket value you would give up before making a change.
Does a lower fare give you a right to a refund?
No general U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) rule requires an airline to return the difference when the same flight becomes cheaper after you book. A fare drop is different from an airline cancellation or a significant schedule change or delay: those disruptions can qualify for a refund if you reject the alternatives offered. Airlines may offer voluntary options under their own policies or the ticket’s fare conditions. Depending on the ticket, you might be able to reprice or change it, cancel for travel credit, or cancel and buy a new ticket. Those outcomes are not necessarily a refund to your original payment method.
When does the 24-hour rule help?
For an airline reservation made at least seven days before departure, DOT requires the airline to offer either a full-refund cancellation within 24 hours of booking or a 24-hour hold at the quoted fare. The airline does not have to offer both options, and this rule does not make other ticket changes free. Read the DOT’s current rule guidance and check which option applies to your booking.

The requirement does not apply to reservations made through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party sellers. If you booked through an intermediary, check the terms of the seller shown on your confirmation rather than assuming the airline’s 24-hour option applies.
What options might the airline offer?
Carrier policies are examples, not industry-wide promises. Southwest says customers may be able to change to a lower fare depending on the fare purchased, or cancel and rebook; its fare-drop help page explains its process. Delta says its 24-hour risk-free cancellation can return the original payment, but a later fare adjustment is not available unless the traveler purchased a refundable fare; see Delta’s change and cancellation information. Confirm current terms for your specific ticket before acting.

How to decide whether changing or rebooking saves money
- Check who sold the ticket. Use your confirmation to identify the airline or third-party seller, the fare family, and the change and cancellation terms. Contact the seller that controls the booking if you need to cancel or rebook.
- Check the 24-hour window promptly. If you booked directly with an airline, are within 24 hours of purchase, and departure is at least seven days away, find out whether the booking qualifies for a refund cancellation or a fare hold. For third-party bookings, ask that seller about its own policy.
- Compare the same trip and ticket conditions. Search the exact itinerary and compare the total price, including any applicable charges, along with the ticket’s restrictions. A lower headline fare may have different conditions or may not be the same itinerary.
- Ask what the seller can actually do. Ask whether it can reprice or change the ticket, cancel it for credit, or cancel it so you can book again. Before accepting credit, confirm its amount, permitted uses, and expiry; get the terms in writing if possible.
- Calculate net savings before cancelling. Subtract fees and any value you would lose from the apparent price difference. Do not give up the existing ticket until you understand its value and restrictions and have confirmed the new fare is still available.
The DOT’s ticket-buying guidance notes that, in some cases, refunding a ticket and rebooking may cost less than paying a change fee and any fare difference. It also cautions that prices can change quickly, so a displayed lower fare is not guaranteed to remain available while you decide.
Refund, credit, and lower-fare change are not the same
- Refund: Money returned to the original form of payment. The DOT’s 24-hour rule describes a full refund when that option applies.
- Travel credit: Value retained for a future booking, often subject to use limits or an expiry date. Verify those terms before accepting it.
- Change or repricing: The airline or seller alters the ticket under the applicable fare rules. It may not return money to your original payment method.
Can the airline raise the fare after you buy?
DOT says that once a ticket is fully purchased and the transaction is complete, the airline generally cannot increase its price. The guidance describes an exception for disclosed government-imposed tax or fee increases to which the traveler consented. This protection against a later increase is separate from any entitlement to money back if the fare subsequently drops. See the DOT’s ticket-buying page for details.

If the flight itself changes, check the disruption rules
If the airline cancels your flight or makes a significant schedule change or delay, do not treat it as an ordinary price drop. Review the DOT’s refund guidance to determine whether you can reject the proposed alternative and receive a refund. That is a distinct issue from the fare becoming cheaper after purchase.
