Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) is an operating vehicle assembly project in Ellabell, Georgia, that builds electrified vehicles. Hyundai held its grand opening on March 26, 2025, and announced plans for capacity of up to 500,000 electric and hybrid vehicles a year. That figure is a planned maximum—not a report of current production.
Where is Hyundai’s Metaplant?
HMGMA is in Ellabell, Bryan County, Georgia, about 20 miles from Savannah. Hyundai describes it as the company’s first dedicated electrified-vehicle mass-production plant. Its location is part of a broader effort to assemble vehicles and develop battery and supplier operations in Georgia. When did it open, and is it operating?
HMGMA held its grand opening on March 26, 2025. A 2026 University of Georgia Electric Mobility Snapshot says the vehicle assembly and battery plant began operations. This establishes operating status, but the available figures do not establish current vehicle output or confirm the commissioning status of every battery operation.
What vehicles are made there?
Hyundai names the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 in its U.S. production mix. The plant is also planned to serve Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis with electric and hybrid vehicles. The model names and planned brand mix describe the facility’s production scope; they do not establish that every model is currently being built at full rate. How many vehicles can it produce?
Hyundai announced capacity of up to 500,000 electric and hybrid vehicles annually in 2025. The University of Georgia’s 2026 snapshot likewise describes that figure as expected capacity. It is a maximum planned capacity, not actual annual production, and should not be used to infer current output.
The project’s plans have changed over time. When Hyundai broke ground in 2022, it described an initial investment of about $5.54 billion and a 300,000-vehicle annual capacity plan. The later 500,000 figure reflects an expanded plan, rather than a contradictory measure of what the plant has already produced. Hyundai’s 2022 groundbreaking announcement provides the earlier figures.

What do the investment and jobs figures mean?
Published totals refer to different scopes and stages. They are announced investments and targets, not proof of spending completed or jobs currently filled.

The $12.6 billion and supplier figures come from Hyundai’s March 2025 opening release; Georgia’s estimate and on-site jobs target appear on its project page. These figures should not be added together: they cover overlapping or distinct parts of a wider investment effort.

How does the plant fit into Hyundai’s U.S. strategy?
HMGMA is one part of a wider localization push, not the entirety of Hyundai’s U.S. investment. On March 25, 2025, Hyundai announced a separate $21 billion group-wide U.S. investment plan for 2025–2028, including plans to expand U.S. vehicle production and localize parts, including EV components, while strengthening logistics and supply chains. Hyundai said the site’s solar parking lot was designed to generate 5.2 megawatts, which the company estimated would equal roughly 5% of the Metaplant’s total power consumption. Those are announced design figures, not independently verified current generation, measured energy share, or emissions savings. Hyundai’s opening release gives the estimate.
