Safe diesel storage starts with a purpose-built tank that is compatible with the generator or equipment and correctly installed for the site. There is no single tank size, storage-life rule, or testing schedule that applies everywhere: location, connected system volume, local codes, and manufacturer instructions all matter. The guidance below is U.S.-focused; check the authorities and requirements for your location before installing or maintaining a system.
Plan the tank as part of a fuel system
Choose a diesel fuel storage tank for the generator or equipment it will serve, and assess the connected system rather than the tank alone. Before selecting capacity, identify the equipment’s fuel requirements, the proposed tank location, and whether piping or other connected components are underground. Have a qualified installer and the implementing authority confirm compatibility and installation requirements.
- Determine the total connected storage arrangement and its location: aboveground, underground, or mixed.
- Confirm tank compatibility and suitability for the fuel system and generator.
- Establish the equipment’s fuel needs before choosing capacity; no universally suitable capacity is established for all generators.
- Plan for required spill and overfill controls, corrosion protection, release detection, inspection access, and maintenance.
- Check the applicable state and local fire code, permitting and installation rules, and any site-specific requirements.
For covered emergency-generator underground storage tank systems, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Federal UST Requirements for Emergency Power Generator UST Systems is a federal starting point. It addresses issues including installation, reporting, spill and overfill prevention, corrosion protection, release detection, inspections, compatibility, operator training, repairs, financial responsibility, release response, and closure. A product listing by itself cannot establish that a tank is suitable for a particular installation.
When federal underground storage tank rules may apply
Under the federal threshold described by EPA, a generator-fueling storage system may be regulated as an underground storage tank when 10 percent or more of its volume is beneath the ground and no exclusion applies. The analysis can include connected tanks and underground piping, so a partly buried system should not be assessed by looking only at the main tank. State requirements may be more stringent. See EPA’s Underground Storage Tank Technical Compendium about the 2015 UST Regulation and consult the state UST agency or implementing authority about the specific configuration.

EPA also notes that NFPA standards apply when jurisdictions incorporate them into regulation. Do not assume a proposed standard provision is automatically a nationwide legal requirement; verify the code edition and provisions adopted where the tank will be installed.
Check fire, workplace, and spill obligations
Rules depend on the site, the fuel system, and how fuel is handled. OSHA’s flammable-liquid standard, 29 CFR 1910.106, covers specified workplace handling and storage situations and includes scope exclusions for some fuel-oil tanks connected to oil-burning equipment. Whether an exclusion applies to a particular installation is a matter to verify, not a general exemption for every generator tank.

Facility owners and operators should also determine whether oil-spill prevention requirements apply. EPA’s Oil Spills Prevention and Preparedness Guidance and References provides resources on Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) obligations, tank inspection, and 40 CFR Part 112. Confirm applicable federal, state, and local rules for the facility.
Maintain the tank and fuel without assuming a universal schedule
Tank condition and fuel quality need ongoing attention, but the available evidence does not establish one storage life or testing interval for every diesel system. Follow the generator and engine manufacturer’s instructions, the currently adopted code, and qualified fuel-maintenance advice for the actual equipment and site. Ensure that the system can be accessed for the condition checks and maintenance those instructions require.

EPA’s study conducted in 2016 found moderate or severe corrosion of internal metal components in 83 percent of the 42 diesel USTs it examined. EPA cautions that this sample cannot establish the share of USTs affected nationwide. The finding supports taking internal condition seriously; it does not show that a particular tank is defective or set an inspection interval. A 2021 NFPA committee agenda and proposal document discusses water at tank bottoms and fuel degradation testing, but proposal material is not proof of the current adopted standard. Verify the NFPA edition adopted by the jurisdiction and the equipment-maker’s instructions before using any proposed interval as a maintenance requirement.

There is no universal best tank type in the available guidance. Compare an aboveground and underground option against the actual installation requirements, rather than assuming one is always safer or simpler.
