You can practice probability and forecast current events without buying or selling event-contract shares. Try a forecasting platform that asks you to assign probabilities to clearly defined questions, then gives feedback after the outcomes resolve. Metaculus and Good Judgment Open offer this kind of practice, though their scoring, incentives and rules differ. Treat forecasts as estimates—not guarantees—and check the terms before joining any challenge.

What makes an alternative safer?

For this purpose, “safer” means practicing forecasting without risking money on event-contract shares. It does not mean every platform activity is free of incentives or other considerations: Metaculus, for example, says some tournaments award cash prizes or medals. Check the rules for the specific activity before participating.

The distinction matters because event contracts are financial products, not just probability quizzes. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes regulated U.S. event contracts as often taking the form of yes-or-no outcomes with a fixed payout and expiration. A contract price reflects traders’ perceived likelihood; someone may receive a payout if correct and lose the amount invested if wrong. Fees and taxes may also affect returns. The CFTC notes that such contracts can be used for hedging or speculation and warns that speculation carries financial risk. Read the CFTC’s event-contract explainer for its U.S.-market description and customer guidance.

The CFTC is a U.S. regulator, and its explanation is not a complete guide to every country or every platform. Don’t assume a particular service is legal everywhere, risk-free or equivalent to gambling. If access or legality matters to you, check current local rules and official regulator information. The CFTC advises customers to understand contract-specific rules, risks, fees and settlement terms, and to check the provider’s identity and registration status.

Where to practice forecasting

Metaculus

Metaculus describes itself as an online forecasting platform and aggregation engine. Participants submit numerical probabilities on questions; the platform combines forecasts using a recency-weighted median and scores forecasts after questions resolve. Its FAQ distinguishes this from prediction markets, where people generally buy or sell shares using real or virtual currency. Metaculus also runs tournaments, some of which award cash prizes or medals, so review the terms of the particular tournament or activity. Metaculus FAQ

Metaculus says its questions are written so participants can understand which outcomes count, and it describes forecasting as “a systematic practice of attempting to answer questions about future events.” A well-defined question makes practice more useful: before estimating, check the resolution criteria, information cutoff and time horizon. Metaculus recommends finding relevant base rates, breaking complex questions into smaller parts, considering alternatives and listing reasons your forecast could be wrong. For group discussion, it suggests a devil’s advocate; it also advises seeking feedback and treating it as information. Its learning resources include reviewing both mistakes and successes after resolution. Metaculus learning resources

Metaculus says, “Steady quantitative feedback and regular practice can greatly improve a forecaster’s accuracy.” That is the platform’s claim, not an independently established effect size for an individual learner. Its published track-record statements also need attribution: Metaculus reports that it scored in the 99.5th percentile in the 2023 ACX prediction tournament and the 97.7th percentile in 2024. Those are the platform’s reported results, not independently verified figures in this article. Metaculus explanation of its performance claims

Offline or classroom practice

A study group or teacher can use the same basic forecasting loop without a trading platform. This is a practical format based on the forecasting practices described by Metaculus, not a claim that a particular classroom intervention has been experimentally validated.

  1. Write a question with an unambiguous outcome and a clear resolution date.
  2. Have each participant privately record a probability and a short rationale, along with the timestamp and information available at that point.
  3. State in advance which source will determine the outcome, then consult it when the question resolves.
  4. Compare forecasts with the outcome and review the reasoning, including what was overlooked or correctly anticipated.

How to get more from each forecast

A forecast is a probability, not a confident-sounding explanation. Assign a number that represents your uncertainty: for example, 70% means you think the outcome is more likely than not, but still meaningfully uncertain. A probability becomes useful for learning when the question resolves and you can compare estimates with outcomes over time.

  1. Choose a resolvable question. Confirm exactly what counts as “yes,” what counts as “no,” and when the question closes. Avoid questions whose answer depends on vague language or an unstated interpretation.
  2. Record your information and reasoning. Note the date, what evidence you considered and the strongest reason your estimate might be wrong. That gives you something concrete to review later.
  3. Look for a base rate. Before letting a dramatic headline dominate your judgment, ask how often comparable events have happened. For a complex question, break it into smaller parts that can be assessed separately.
  4. Submit a numerical probability. Avoid treating a platform’s aggregate as a fact. It is an estimate assembled from participants’ forecasts, not a guarantee about the outcome.
  5. Return after resolution. Review the score and your reasoning. Look at successes as well as errors: one correct guess does not prove a sound method, and one miss does not by itself show that the probability was unreasonable.

What a crowd forecast can—and cannot—tell you

Aggregated estimates can help you see how a group is assessing a question, but they are not promises that an event will occur. Metaculus says that when its forecast is 70% likely, the event occurs roughly 70% of the time. That is the platform’s calibration illustration, not a prediction that any individual event assigned 70% will happen or a guarantee of future performance. Metaculus explanation of its forecasts

Also separate a forecast from a market price. A market price arises from trading in a contract; a probability platform asks participants to express estimates. A forecast can still be wrong, and a tournament may have prizes, but submitting a probability is not the same action as buying an event-contract share. Check each activity’s actual rules rather than relying on labels alone.

Metaculus lists Superforecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction among its forecasting resources. It is optional further reading, not a prerequisite for practicing. Metaculus learning resources
