Blue Owl Capital is a publicly traded alternative asset manager. It raises and manages money for institutional and private-wealth clients, then invests that capital through three platforms: Credit, Real Assets, and GP Strategic Capital. Its main revenue engine is fees for managing investments, not the total amount of money it manages.

What Blue Owl Capital does

Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE: OWL) manages investment strategies on behalf of clients; it is not simply a private-credit fund. The company describes its organization as a “one-firm” model and reports one operating and reportable segment. Its three platforms pursue different strategies and work with different kinds of assets and businesses. Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the business, while its investor overview identifies its platforms and client groups.

What the three platforms invest in

Credit

Blue Owl’s Credit platform spans direct lending, alternative credit, investment-grade and liquid credit, and related strategies. Direct lending provides customized financing primarily to upper-middle-market companies. Other activities include asset-backed and specialty finance, broadly syndicated loans, and collateralized loan obligations (CLOs). A CLO is a vehicle that holds a portfolio of loans and issues securities with different payment priorities.

Real Assets

Real Assets focuses on net lease real estate, real estate credit, and digital infrastructure. Net lease investments are largely in single-tenant properties. Real estate credit provides financing secured by real assets, while digital infrastructure includes data centers and related infrastructure.

GP Strategic Capital

GP Strategic Capital invests in private-capital managers by acquiring minority equity stakes and providing debt financing. Blue Owl says its Business Services Platform also offers strategic support to partner managers. In the minority-stakes strategy, the 2025 Form 10-K describes revenue sources at the underlying manager level that include a contractually fixed share of management fees, carried interest, and returns on investments made with the manager’s own balance-sheet capital.

How Blue Owl earns revenue

Management and advisory fees

Blue Owl says revenue comes primarily from investment advisory and management agreements. The company recognizes management fees over the period in which it performs the investment-management services, and generally collects them quarterly. The fee calculation depends on the product and strategy; there is no single fee formula that applies to all of Blue Owl’s managed capital.

The 2025 Form 10-K describes several fee bases. Regulated credit products typically charge on average gross asset value or net asset value (NAV); CLO fees are based on the par value of collateral. Other credit products may charge on gross or net asset value, investment cost, or, in some cases, uncalled capital. Real-assets fees may be based on committed or called capital during an investment period and later often on unrealized investment cost or NAV. GP minority-stakes fees may be based on committed capital and later on unrealized investment cost.

Certain regulated and similarly structured products can also generate Part I fees based on net investment income, subject to performance hurdles. These product-specific terms matter: fee-paying assets do not all produce the same fee rate or timing.

Other and performance-related revenue

Other revenue includes administrative, transaction, and other fees. Blue Owl also reports fees for services to portfolio companies, such as arranging, syndicating, originating, and structuring transactions, as well as performance revenues.

How to read Blue Owl’s scale and earnings figures

Assets under management (AUM) is the amount of assets Blue Owl manages on behalf of investors. Fee-paying AUM is the portion on which the company is currently entitled to management fees under the relevant arrangements. Neither is revenue: they are measures of managed capital at a point in time.

Blue Owl also reports earnings measures that should not be confused with one another. For the year ended December 31, 2025, its Form 10-K reported $2.65 billion of fee-related earnings (FRE) and $1.31 billion of distributable earnings (DE), both company-defined non-GAAP measures. The same filing reported $78.8 million of net income attributable to Blue Owl Capital Inc., a GAAP measure. FRE and DE are not interchangeable with GAAP net income; their definitions and adjustments are company-specific.

What the business model means for investors

Blue Owl’s earnings depend on the assets it manages, the fee terms attached to those assets, investment deployment, and other revenue sources. The 2025 Form 10-K discusses risks including market and credit conditions, valuation uncertainty, liquidity constraints, and the pace of deployment. Historical returns of its products do not guarantee future results. A large AUM figure alone therefore does not establish investment performance, current revenue, or future earnings.

In its fourth-quarter 2025 results release, Co-CEOs Doug Ostrover and Marc Lipschultz said: “Blue Owl’s results for the full year of 2025 highlight record fundraising in our institutional and private wealth channels, reflecting robust investor interest in our strategies and Blue Owl’s continued global expansion.” That statement describes management’s view of fundraising and investor interest; it is not a promise of returns or a measure of future revenue.
