Apple’s current high-end desktop is Mac Studio, announced with M5 Max and M5 Ultra configurations. But it is not a one-for-one replacement: Mac Studio is a compact desktop with external PCIe expansion options, while the Mac Pro was a tower with internal PCIe expansion.
Did Apple discontinue the Mac Pro?
9to5Mac reported on March 26, 2026, that Apple confirmed the Mac Pro was discontinued and that the company had no plans for future Mac Pro hardware. That is the outlet’s account of Apple’s confirmation; Apple’s cited newsroom announcements do not themselves announce the retirement. Read 9to5Mac’s report.
The change closes a product line Apple had still positioned as a professional tower in 2023. When Apple introduced Mac Pro and Mac Studio together that year, it described the Mac Pro as combining M2 Ultra with PCIe expansion. That is historical context, not evidence of current availability or specifications. Apple’s 2023 announcement.
What replaces the Mac Pro?
Apple’s current announced pro desktop is Mac Studio, available with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Apple announced the configurations on August 25, 2026, and said the models would be available starting September 22; its September 22 release said they were available that day. #1 Best Overall
| Mac Studio configuration | Apple-published specifications | Announced U.S. starting price |
|---|---|---|
| M5 Max | 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, up to 128GB unified memory | $2,499; $2,299 for education |
| M5 Ultra | 36-core CPU, up to 80-core GPU, up to 512GB unified memory | $5,499; $5,099 for education |
Specifications and prices are Apple’s published configuration and announcement figures, not independent measurements or guaranteed current transaction prices. Apple said the 512GB unified-memory configuration was expected in late October 2026.
Performance claims need their baseline
Apple advertises up to 4.3x faster AI performance, up to 2x faster storage, up to 1.8x faster graphics and up to 1.3x faster CPU speed. Those are manufacturer comparisons whose meaning depends on Apple’s stated comparison baselines and footnotes; they are not independent head-to-head tests against the discontinued Mac Pro.

Connectivity and expansion
Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thunderbolt 5 on the new Mac Studio. It says Thunderbolt 5 can connect high-speed external storage, PCIe expansion chassis and hubs, and can link multiple Mac Studio systems for distributed AI inference. This gives some users an external expansion route, but it is not the same as installing PCIe cards inside a Mac Pro tower. Before choosing an external chassis, check compatibility among the specific card, enclosure, software and Mac configuration.
Is Mac Studio a replacement for every Mac Pro workflow?
No universal equivalence is established. Mac Studio may fit professional workloads that suit its Apple-silicon performance, unified-memory configurations and compact design. A former Mac Pro user whose setup depends on internal PCIe cards should treat the move as a change in system architecture, not just a smaller case. Thunderbolt-connected expansion may address some needs, but compatibility and workflow suitability depend on the actual hardware and software.

Apple’s chief hardware officer Johny Srouji called Mac Studio “the ultimate desktop for on-device AI and the world’s most demanding pro workflows,” describing its performance, connectivity and compact design. That is Apple’s promotional characterization, not an independent verdict.

The announced U.S. starting prices differ by $3,000 between M5 Max and M5 Ultra. That gap is a reason to size the system to the work rather than assume every former Mac Pro buyer needs the Ultra model. Compare the requirements that affect the complete setup:
Rank #4
- Workload: Identify the applications and tasks that drive CPU, GPU or AI performance needs; Apple’s multipliers alone do not establish performance for a specific workflow.
- Memory: Match the unified-memory ceiling to the workload and project sizes you actually need to run.
- Expansion: List the PCIe cards and other peripherals your setup requires, then verify whether a specific Thunderbolt chassis supports them.
- Desk and cabling: Account for the compact computer plus any external storage, chassis, hubs and connected devices.
- Total cost: Compare the selected Mac Studio configuration and any required external equipment—not just the advertised starting prices.
Apple has not supplied independent comparative testing between the discontinued Mac Pro and the M5 Max or M5 Ultra Mac Studio in the cited announcements. The choice therefore turns on verified compatibility and workload needs, not a blanket claim that one system replaces the other.
