Etsy is one documented option for handmade cards, original printables, and seller-designed cards printed by a disclosed production partner; there is no single best venue for every maker.
1. Choose a card idea and make an original design
Start with a recipient, occasion, or audience you understand: birthdays, thank-you notes, weddings, local themes, or a particular interest. Make a small batch or talk with potential buyers before investing in a large inventory. That is a low-risk way to test the idea, not a guarantee of demand.
Create your own artwork and wording, and keep source files and records of any commercial licenses for fonts, stock elements, or commissioned work. Don’t use protected characters, logos, lyrics, or someone else’s artwork unless you have the necessary rights. This matters both for your business and for marketplaces such as Etsy, whose Seller Policy, effective July 9, 2026, requires sellers to respect others’ intellectual property.
2. Pick a production method
Your production choice determines how much labor, equipment, inventory, and fulfillment you take on. Etsy’s rules recognize seller-made items and seller-designed items, including original digital downloads and original designs printed by a third party when that production partner is disclosed.

#1 Best Overall
| Method | What you do | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Handmade assembly | Print or draw the design, then cut, fold, finish, and package each card yourself. | You control the finish, but labor and consistency can limit how quickly you fulfill orders. |
| Print at home | Design digitally and print small quantities on your own printer, then cut and fold them. | You can make small batches, but must account for ink, paper, setup, and failed prints. |
| Order a print run | Send your design to a printer and keep finished stock to fulfill orders. | Printing can reduce hands-on production per card, but requires checking supplier quotes and deciding how much inventory to hold. |
| Third-party production partner | Have a provider print or produce your seller-designed card, and arrange how orders are fulfilled. | This reduces some production handling but adds supplier and fulfillment costs. Etsy requires disclosure of relevant production partners. |
| Digital printable | Prepare files buyers can download and print themselves. | No physical stock or postage, but the files, printing instructions, and permitted-use terms must be clear. |
3. Prototype and check the finished card
Before listing, make a sample using the materials and process you intend to sell. Check the finished dimensions, fold direction, print alignment, color, legibility, inside message, envelope fit, and protection for shipping. There is no single paper weight or printer setting that applies to every card; test the actual combination you plan to use.
For physical cards, budget for suitable card stock, envelopes, cutting and folding tools, adhesive or embellishments if needed, and protective packaging. Keep a physical sample so you can compare later batches with the finish you photographed and described.

4. Calculate a price that accounts for the whole order
Start with a per-order worksheet, using your actual costs and the channel’s current rates:
Price − materials − labor − packaging − postage subsidy − platform fees − payment processing − advertising − waste and overhead = estimated contribution before tax

Include paper, ink or print charges, envelopes, embellishments, time spent making and packing, failed prints, and any postage you cover. Set an hourly labor rate even if you are not paying yourself in cash at first; otherwise a time-consuming card can look profitable while effectively paying you nothing. Recalculate after fulfilling test orders.
Etsy’s fee guidance lists a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount in the listing currency, including shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing is additional and varies by country. Etsy also lists a 2.5% currency-conversion fee when your listing currency differs from your payment account currency. If an order is attributed to Offsite Ads, the listed fee is 15% for sellers below $10,000 in Etsy sales in the previous 365 days or 12% at or above that threshold, capped at $100 per order. Regulatory operating fees apply in specified countries.

Those figures do not produce one universal Etsy cost: your location, account, and order details affect the total. Check the live fee page and estimate a sample order before setting prices. Etsy says its listing interface displays a profit estimate, but you are responsible for choosing a sustainable price. A multi-card pack may spread transaction and shipping costs across several cards, but compare the real economics with what buyers expect to purchase.
5. Compare places to sell before committing
Etsy is a practical online route to evaluate for original handmade cards and seller-designed printables. It can put listings in front of marketplace shoppers, but that does not establish that it is the best or most profitable venue. Compare channels by the costs and work you would actually take on:
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
| Channel | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Marketplace such as Etsy | How will buyers discover your work? What are the listing, transaction, payment-processing, and advertising costs? What rules, competition, and shipping expectations apply? |
| In-person market or craft fair | What are the table fee and travel costs? How much inventory might remain unsold? Is there local demand, and how will you take payments? |
| Local gift shop or bookstore | Will the retailer buy wholesale or take cards on consignment? What margin, minimum quantity, payment terms, delivery requirements, return terms, or exclusivity would apply? |
| Independent online shop | What are the monthly and payment costs, and how will you bring in traffic, manage checkout, fulfill orders, and handle customer support? |
| Print-on-demand service | What are the per-card production and shipping costs? Can it make your card format and handle personalization? Who checks samples and answers customer questions? |
| Digital printable listings | What file formats and buyer instructions are needed? Are the terms of use clear, and does the platform permit your digital item? |
Terms, fees, eligibility, and audience access vary by provider and venue, so verify them directly before relying on any particular channel. A manageable first experiment is one online route and one local route. Keep records of sales, direct costs, hours spent, and unsold inventory for a defined trial period; compare net earnings and time rather than sales totals alone.

Etsy’s listing guide instructs sellers to register, create a listing, choose a relevant category, classify the item as physical or digital, add media, complete product information, set price and quantity, provide processing and shipping details, and publish. Etsy says a listing may take up to 48 hours to appear in search and categories.
Quick Recap
- Prepare photos and video. Etsy’s current listing guidance allows up to 20 photos and 2 videos per listing. Photograph the actual card in good light. Show the front, inside if relevant, scale, envelope, distinctive texture or embellishment, and packaging.
- Write a specific title. Say what the product is and include useful details. Etsy advises against repetition and subjective filler. Make clear whether it is one card, a set, a printable file, or a custom design.
- Describe the product accurately. State the occasion or use, dimensions, paper or other materials, finish, whether the inside is blank or printed, and whether an envelope is included. For digital products, explain what files the buyer receives and how to print them.
- Set options and timing. Enter price, quantity, processing time, and shipping information for a physical item. For custom work, explain what can be personalized and any limits on text length or revisions.
- Add relevant tags. Etsy allows up to 13 tags. Use accurate terms a buyer could use for the card’s occasion, recipient, style, or format.
- Describe production honestly. Etsy’s policy requires listings to represent accurately how an item was made, by whom, and where it ships from. Disclose a production partner where required, and check the live policy and help pages before publishing because marketplace rules can change.
7. Publish only when the listing and fulfillment are ready
- The design and wording are original, or you have documented commercial permission for every third-party asset.
- You have inspected a sample for print quality, dimensions, folding, finish, and envelope fit.
- Your photos show the product buyers will receive, and your description identifies physical versus digital delivery.
- Your price includes materials, labor, packaging, shipping costs you cover, platform and payment fees, advertising where applicable, and production waste.
- Your stated quantity, processing time, and dispatch expectations match what you can fulfill.
- Your production method and any required partner disclosure are represented accurately.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
