Why PC Shipments Are Falling in 2026—and Whether AI Can Turn Them Around

IDC and Gartner forecast a 2026 decline in global PC shipments, while higher component costs may push buyers to delay upgrades. AI PCs are gaining share, but that does not yet show AI can reverse the overall decline.

PC shipments are forecast to fall in 2026 even as AI PCs gain share. The apparent mismatch is about costs and timing: memory shortages are pushing prices up, and buyers are expected to keep devices longer. AI could make new PCs more appealing, but current forecasts do not show it offsetting the decline in total shipments. The analyst outlooks below are forecasts, not final shipment results.

What the 2026 PC shipment forecasts say

IDC and Gartner both forecast a contraction in global PC shipments in 2026, but their estimates differ because they are separate outlooks published at different times—not a shared consensus or a final count.

Firm and release date 2026 shipment outlook Other forecast figures
IDC, June 2, 2026 Global PC shipments down 11.3% year over year; declines could reach 20% in Q4. Average selling prices up 17% in 2026. IDC attributes the outlook chiefly to persistent memory shortages, with no meaningful relief expected before the end of 2027.
Gartner, February 26, 2026 Global PC shipments down 10.4% year over year. Combined DRAM and SSD prices estimated to rise 130% by the end of 2026; PC prices forecast 17% higher than in 2025.

These figures describe shipments—the flow of devices into distribution channels—not direct measurements of what consumers bought at retail or of market revenue. Higher average prices can raise the value of sales even as fewer machines ship, so shipment growth and financial performance are not interchangeable.

Why shipments can weaken despite an economic recovery

The title’s “economic recovery” premise is not measured by these PC-market sources. Their evidence explains the PC outlook, not whether the wider economy is recovering. Even if economic conditions improve, that alone does not ensure that households and businesses replace computers on schedule.

Memory and storage costs are squeezing affordability

IDC points to a persistent memory shortage, while Gartner’s February outlook estimates sharp increases in combined DRAM and SSD costs. When components become more expensive, manufacturers may raise PC prices or offer fewer configurations at lower price points. Buyers facing a more expensive replacement may postpone it, particularly if their existing computer still works.

Replacement cycles are expected to lengthen

Gartner forecast that by the end of 2026 PC lifetimes would increase 15% for business buyers and 20% for consumers. These are projected extensions, not measured outcomes. The mechanism is straightforward: if replacement devices cost more, customers can defer upgrades, reducing unit shipments even when demand has not disappeared.

Gartner Senior Director Analyst Ranjit Atwal described the outlook as “the steepest contraction in device shipments witnessed in over a decade,” adding that higher prices could narrow device choice and lead buyers to hold onto PCs longer. Gartner also forecast that “the sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.” That is a prediction, not an observed disappearance.

A strong quarter can reflect purchases moved forward

IDC reported that Q1 2026 shipments grew 3% year over year, but said consumers and commercial buyers brought purchases forward ahead of anticipated price increases and shortages. IDC Vice President Jean Philippe Bouchard said, “The anticipation of rising prices and of limited availability of some system configurations due to memory and other component shortages has led some end-users to make purchases earlier than anticipated.”

When customers buy earlier than planned, that can lift shipments now while leaving fewer purchases for later periods. A positive quarter therefore does not by itself establish durable replacement demand or a sustained recovery.

Can AI PCs turn the market around?

AI PCs are a growing share of the market in Gartner’s forecasts, but share growth does not necessarily mean enough additional devices to reverse a fall in total shipments. Gartner’s August 28, 2025 forecast projected 143.1 million AI PC shipments in 2026, equal to 54.7% of the market, after estimating 77.8 million units and 31.0% share in 2025. Those were forecasts, not confirmed shipment totals.

Gartner’s later February 2026 outlook said rising AI PC prices would delay the projected milestone of 50% market penetration until 2028. The changed outlook shows how sensitive adoption expectations are to price conditions. It also cautions against treating the earlier share projection as proof that AI would increase overall PC demand: buyers can choose an AI-capable device when replacing a PC without replacing it sooner, or can defer the purchase altogether.

What on-device AI might offer

Gartner has pointed to potential benefits from running smaller language models locally, including faster responses, lower energy use, and less reliance on cloud services. It also forecast that 40% of software vendors would prioritize on-PC AI capabilities by the end of 2026, compared with 2% in 2024. These are Gartner’s expectations about software development and possible device benefits—not evidence that most buyers will upgrade because of AI.

The practical value depends on whether a buyer’s applications use those capabilities and whether local processing matters enough to justify the device’s price. For someone whose current PC meets their needs, a larger AI-PC share across new shipments is not itself a reason to replace it.

What this means for household and business decisions

For personal-finance decisions, distinguish a useful upgrade from a market trend. Consider replacing a PC when its limitations interfere with work, study, security, or essential applications—not simply because new models are labeled “AI PCs.” Compare the total price with the features you will actually use, and weigh that cost against keeping a functioning computer longer.

Businesses face a similar trade-off at fleet scale: delayed replacement can conserve near-term spending, while older machines may not support required applications or operating needs. The cited forecasts do not identify the right refresh schedule for any particular household or organization.

IDC also cited the MacBook Neo as a competitive pressure in the notebook ecosystem; IDC Director of Consumer Devices Research Jitesh Ubrani said, “The introduction of the MacBook Neo is putting real pressure on the entire PC ecosystem.” That comment concerns competitive notebook pricing and does not establish that the MacBook Neo is an AI PC.

How to read these forecasts

  • Separate forecasts from results: IDC’s June and Gartner’s February estimates are not final 2026 shipment counts, and future releases may revise them.
  • Keep units, prices, and revenue distinct: fewer shipments can coexist with higher average prices; none of the cited shipment estimates alone establishes retail sell-through or revenue.
  • Treat AI adoption as a product-mix signal: forecast AI-PC share does not demonstrate that AI caused buyers to upgrade or that it will offset the total-unit decline.
  • Apply the geography carefully: the cited shipment outlooks are global, not a U.S.-only forecast.
