HNT vs. Solana (SOL): How the Helium Ecosystem Uses Each Token

HNT and SOL do different jobs in Helium: HNT supports protocol incentives and can be burned for Data Credits, while SOL covers the Solana fees needed for on-chain transactions.

HNT and SOL are not substitutes: HNT serves Helium’s token incentives and can be burned to create Data Credits for network usage, while SOL pays the Solana transaction fees and account costs needed to carry out on-chain actions. Helium’s move to Solana changed where its token activity happens, not what each token does.

HNT vs. SOL at a glance

Question HNT SOL
What is it? Helium’s native cryptocurrency and protocol token. Solana’s native token.
Its main role in the Helium ecosystem Supports Helium incentives; can be burned to create Data Credits (DC) for network services. Pays Solana transaction fees and account costs for on-chain interactions, including Helium actions.
What pays for network data usage? DC, created by burning HNT. Not SOL; Helium documents DC as the usage-payment mechanism.
What pays to submit an on-chain action? HNT may be the asset being burned or handled, but it does not replace Solana’s transaction fee. SOL pays the Solana transaction fee; some actions also require SOL for account rent or creation.

Helium migrated to Solana on April 18, 2023. HNT retained its Helium protocol role and has a token mint on Solana; it did not become SOL or take over SOL’s fee function. Helium’s HNT documentation and Solana-token documentation describe the distinction.

What does HNT do?

Helium describes HNT as its protocol token. Hotspot hosts and operators can be rewarded in HNT, while enterprises and developers use Helium network services and pay the applicable network fees in DC. HNT is therefore associated with Helium’s incentive and token economics; it is not the unit used to pay each data transfer directly.

Helium says the first HNT was emitted on July 29, 2019, with no pre-mine. Its documented supply design includes scheduled emissions and a burn-and-mint mechanism linked to DC creation. Those mechanisms matter when describing the token: a burn is not automatically the same as an equal, permanent reduction in total supply.

Emissions and net emissions

Helium’s current HNT schedule lists target emissions of 7,500,000 HNT for the year beginning August 1, 2025, and 7,500,000 HNT for the year beginning August 1, 2026. These are schedule targets, not a statement that exactly that amount was issued. Helium notes that slow block times in the first year left issuance about 17 million HNT below the original schedule target; the maximum supply at HIP-20 approval had consequently declined from the initial 240 million target to approximately 223 million. See the HNT supply and emission documentation for the schedule and its qualifications.

Helium also documents net emissions: the protocol can add HNT corresponding to HNT burned in an epoch, subject to a cap. Its current documentation gives a cap of 1,643.83561643 HNT per 24-hour epoch and describes a smoothing mechanism implemented as part of HRP 2025-03. This is a documented protocol parameter, not an independent verification of on-chain activity. The purpose described is to keep rewards available as scheduled emissions halve, while relating issuance to recent burns and enforcing the cap.

What are Data Credits, and how do they connect to HNT?

Data Credits are Helium’s payment mechanism for network usage on IoT and Mobile. One DC equals $0.00001 USD, according to Helium’s Data Credit documentation. Users create DC by burning HNT; the number of HNT required changes with HNT’s USD price as reported by the Data Credits program’s on-chain Pyth price feed. DC therefore provide a USD-linked unit for network charges even though HNT’s market value can change.

Helium lists selected network charges in DC, including Mobile data and certain IoT-related actions such as Hotspot onboarding and location assertion. Its documentation lists Helium Mobile at $0.10 per gigabyte, or 10,000 DC; treat that as the value shown in the documentation, not a guarantee of current commercial pricing. Check the current Data Credit page for applicable charges.

Conversion is one-way

Once created, DC are non-transferable: Helium says they cannot be refunded, exchanged for other tokens, or moved between wallets. Users may delegate DC to network-operator wallets by arrangement, but Helium describes delegation as a one-time action. As a result, converting HNT to DC is not like swapping into a freely transferable stablecoin; it commits the burned HNT to network-use credits.

What is SOL used for in Helium?

SOL pays the fees required to interact with the Solana blockchain. That applies even when the purpose of the transaction is Helium-related: Helium lists sending tokens, staking, payments, swaps, claiming Hotspot rewards, and other on-chain Helium actions as examples. Its Solana-token documentation gives an average transaction-fee example of 0.000014 SOL and an approximate account-rent example of 0.002 SOL. These are documentation examples, not guaranteed costs; more complex transactions or account creation may require more SOL.

The practical distinction is visible in an HNT-to-DC conversion: HNT is the asset burned to create DC, but a small amount of SOL may also be needed to submit the burn transaction. Helium’s maker documentation notes this SOL requirement.

What the distinction means for a Helium user

  • If you are paying for Helium network usage, the relevant unit is DC, which are created by burning HNT.
  • If you are submitting a Helium action on Solana, keep SOL available for transaction fees and any applicable account costs.
  • If you operate a Hotspot, HNT may be part of the reward and incentive system, but that does not eliminate SOL requirements for on-chain transactions.
  • If comparing the tokens as assets, their utility descriptions alone do not establish future prices, returns, or investment suitability.
