Hotspot operators may earn HNT for eligible network activity, but those rewards are separate from locking tokens. To follow Helium’s documented process, you need a Solana-compatible wallet and SOL for transaction fees; check the live interface and proposal before signing because Helium’s governance guide says it has not been fully updated since the migration to Solana.
What staking HNT means—and what it does not mean
Helium describes staking as locking HNT in Realms so token holders can participate in governance. The lock gives the holder voting power called veHNT, which is handled through Solana’s voter stake registry program. Helium’s guide describes the purpose as governance participation and voting on proposed changes, not as a promised financial return. The cited documentation does not establish a fixed or guaranteed yield for locked HNT.
Helium migrated from its own blockchain to Solana on April 18, 2023. HNT remains the network’s native cryptocurrency and protocol token. Helium’s HNT token documentation explains its role in the network.
Governance locking versus Hotspot rewards
“HNT rewards” can refer to two different things. Locking HNT in Realms supports governance participation; it is not the same as operating network infrastructure. Helium says Hotspots can earn HNT for eligible activity, including carrying data. Those rewards are tracked and claimed for rewardable entities, as described in Helium’s Rewardable Entities documentation.

HNT also has network-level tokenomics that should not be mistaken for an individual staker’s return. Helium says HNT is burned to produce Data Credits, a USD-pegged utility token used for network data-transfer fees, and describes a two-year halving schedule. Its emissions table lists a scheduled target of 7,500,000 HNT for each year beginning August 1, 2025 and August 1, 2026. These are network emission targets, not staking returns or estimates of what a holder will receive. See the HNT token page for the schedule and burn-and-mint explanation.
What you need before locking HNT
- HNT in a Solana-compatible wallet. Helium recommends the Helium Wallet for Helium users, but says any Solana-compatible wallet can perform the described functions. The cited guide does not validate a specific hardware-wallet model.
- SOL for on-chain costs. Solana transactions require SOL for fees, and Helium notes that locking HNT for veHNT and creating accounts may involve fees and rent. The exact cost depends on the transaction and network; the cited sources do not establish a fixed fee. See Helium’s Solana token documentation.
- A lock commitment you understand. Helium’s guide describes terms from six months to four years, with two countdown modes explained below.
How to lock HNT in Realms
The following is the broad flow in Helium’s governance guide. Since the guide warns that it has not been fully updated to reflect the post-migration network, the live interface may differ. Confirm the current labels, transaction details, and proposal before approving a wallet prompt.

- Acquire HNT and SOL. Keep enough SOL in the connected wallet for the transaction and any account creation costs.
- Open Helium Realms and connect your wallet. Use a wallet compatible with Solana.
- Open “my governance power.” Helium’s guide uses this interface label.
- Choose “Lock Tokens.” Select the HNT amount and the lock duration and mode that fit your intended commitment.
- Review and sign the transaction in your wallet. Check the amount, lock settings, and network fee shown in the current prompt before confirming.
- To vote, find an active proposal in Realms and cast your vote. Review the proposal itself; locking tokens and voting are related governance actions, but a lock alone is not a vote.
The instructions and interface terms above come from Helium’s governance guide. The guide identifies Realms as Helium’s current governance phase while noting its post-migration documentation caveat.
Choose a lock term and countdown mode
Helium’s guide documents lock periods from six months to four years. It describes two modes; the practical distinction is when the lock countdown begins.

| Choice | How the guide describes it | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Decaying | The countdown begins immediately. | The lock period runs down from the time the lock is created. |
| Constant | The selected lock period stays in place until the user starts the countdown. | The countdown does not begin automatically at lock creation, according to the guide. |
Helium’s cited guide does not provide enough detail to calculate an individual wallet’s current veHNT voting power or establish an exact unlock outcome for a particular lock. Check the values and terms shown in the current Realms interface before committing.

Helium’s governance page contains this explicit qualification: it “has not been fully updated to represent the latest state of the Helium Network following the migration to Solana on April 18, 2023.” Treat its walkthrough as the documented outline, not a guarantee that every screen or prompt is unchanged. Before you sign, verify the current Realms flow, the active proposal, and the lock settings presented by the wallet.
