How to Connect a Wallet to a DEX Without Exposing Your Seed Phrase

Connect your wallet to a DEX through its official site and wallet prompt. Never share your seed phrase, and review token approvals and transactions separately.

You can connect a wallet to a decentralized exchange (DEX) without entering or sharing your seed phrase—also called a Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP). Use the DEX’s official website, choose your wallet or WalletConnect, then approve the connection in your wallet. Review any later transaction signature or token approval separately: connecting alone is not permission for a DEX to spend your tokens.

Connect your wallet safely

Use the DEX’s verified website rather than a link sent by an unsolicited message or support account. The precise buttons vary by exchange, but the general flow is to start the connection on the site and confirm it in your wallet.

  1. Open the official DEX site. Use a trusted source for the link and check the domain carefully before connecting.
  2. Select the connection control. On Uniswap, for example, select Connect, then choose your wallet. The controls on other DEXs may differ. Uniswap’s connection instructions also describe using WalletConnect or, on mobile, opening the wallet app or using its in-app browser.
  3. Choose a connection method. Select your installed wallet if it appears. If it does not, choose WalletConnect if both the DEX and your wallet support it, then follow the prompts to open or pair with your wallet.
  4. Check the wallet prompt. Confirm that the site and requested account are the ones you intended to use. Approve the connection only if the request makes sense.
  5. Handle any swap prompts separately. A swap may involve a token approval followed by a transaction for the swap itself. Read each wallet prompt before signing.

What connecting does—and does not—allow

A connection generally lets a dapp see information such as your wallet balance and propose transactions. It does not, by itself, give the DEX permission to move your assets. MetaMask explains the distinction in its guide to dapp connections: assets can move when you sign transactions the dapp proposes.

A token approval is a separate smart-contract permission. It can allow a specified spender contract to move the approved token up to the amount permitted. Uniswap describes an approval as permission for the protocol to swap the token you approved. Uniswap’s token-approval explanation covers this step.

  • Check which token is being approved.
  • Check the spender or contract named in the wallet prompt.
  • Check the permitted amount. If the wallet and DEX offer an amount control, approving only what you need may limit exposure compared with an unnecessary unlimited allowance.

Disconnecting a site from your wallet is not the same as revoking token approvals. A previously granted allowance may remain in effect after the visible connection ends. MetaMask explains how dapp connections and token approvals differ in its allowance-revocation guidance.

When a seed phrase request is a warning sign

A DEX connection should be approved through your wallet’s connection prompt; it should not require you to type your SRP into the DEX website or give it to a person claiming to be support. MetaMask’s safety guidance is explicit: “We will never ask you to provide your SRP.” It says the limited legitimate situations for entering the phrase are confirming it during initial wallet setup or restoring a wallet on a new or reset installation—not connecting to a DEX. See MetaMask’s guidance on protecting your SRP and password.

If a page, message, or person asks for your recovery phrase or private key, stop. Do not enter it, send it, or share a screenshot containing it. A request framed as account verification, wallet synchronization, or a way to fix a connection does not change that rule.

Check prompts before you sign

A legitimate-looking connection is not proof that every later request is safe. Before approving a connection, approval, or transaction, check the site and account. For a token approval or swap, also inspect the network, token, spender, amount, and transaction details shown by your wallet. Pause if a prompt is unexpected or unclear rather than signing just to continue.

Some wallets and extensions can display connection or transaction warnings, requested permissions, decoded transaction data, or alerts about unverified or potentially malicious contracts. Uniswap describes these features for its Wallet and Extension in its security-features overview. Treat a warning as a reason to investigate; the absence of one is not a guarantee that a site or transaction is safe.

Desktop and mobile connection choices

The best route depends on your device and wallet. On desktop, the DEX may offer a direct option for an installed browser wallet or a WalletConnect pairing. On mobile, it may direct you to open the wallet app or use its in-app browser. Use the route presented by the DEX and wallet, and make sure the account shown in the wallet is the one you intend to connect. Uniswap documents these options as examples; other exchanges may present different controls.

Consider a hardware wallet for higher-value holdings

A hardware wallet keeps transaction signing tied to a separate device, which can add a layer of key isolation for larger holdings. MetaMask recommends considering one for large balances; the device must authorize transactions. It is not required to connect to a DEX, and it cannot protect you if you approve a malicious transaction on the device. The same careful review of the site, spender, token, amount, and transaction still matters. See MetaMask’s advice on keeping funds safe.
