Official materials do not confirm that the Department of Education is scheduled to shut down in two weeks. The department’s September 2025 contingency plan explains what could happen during a lapse in federal appropriations; it does not announce a new shutdown date. A separate student-aid notice covered a limited G5 payment-system pause on September 30 and October 1, 2026. That window has passed and was not a department-wide shutdown.
For borrowers, the practical point is that an appropriations lapse would not automatically stop federal loan payments or all student-aid operations. Federal Student Aid advised borrowers during a February 2026 lapse to keep paying, while warning that some services could be delayed. Check your servicer and StudentAid.gov for current instructions if another lapse occurs.
Is the Department of Education scheduled to shut down in two weeks?
The official materials cited here do not establish that timing. The Department of Education’s FY 2026 lapse contingency plan is dated September 28, 2025, and describes what the agency would do if appropriations lapsed. It is contingency planning, not notice of a shutdown scheduled two weeks after October 4, 2026.
A later Federal Student Aid notice concerned a different, narrower event: fiscal-year accounting downtime for the G5 payment system on September 30 and October 1, 2026. Those dates have passed. The notice does not establish that the Department itself was closing, or that a new shutdown was imminent.

What would an appropriations lapse mean for student aid?
A lapse in appropriations can furlough staff and pause or slow some government work. It does not necessarily stop every student-aid function. The Department’s 2025 plan says Pell Grant and Direct Loan funds rely on mandatory and carryover appropriations, and identifies FAFSA processing, grant and loan disbursements, and loan servicing among operations expected to continue as available funds and prefunded resources allow.
That qualification matters: continued funding for key operations does not mean the Department would function normally. The plan estimated that approximately 95 percent of non-Federal Student Aid staff would be furloughed in the first week of a lapse. For a lapse lasting more than one week, it estimated approximately 330 full-time-equivalent staff would work at some point and approximately 2,117 employees would be furloughed. Those estimates were based on staffing levels as of September 20, 2025; they are not current headcounts.

The plan said more than 9.9 million students at approximately 5,400 schools received grants and loans. Those figures describe the population the plan addressed, not a prediction that every student or school would experience the same disruption.
What should federal student loan borrowers do?
During the February 2026 lapse addressed in its guidance, Federal Student Aid said core servicer operations—including billing and payment receipt—were continuing. Its instruction was direct: “Borrowers should still make payments on federal student loans.” That guidance applies to the lapse it addressed; borrowers facing a later lapse should check their servicer and current StudentAid.gov notices rather than assume the circumstances are identical.

Continuing payments does not guarantee that every service will be available on its usual schedule. Federal Student Aid warned that refunds and discharges could be delayed, some employee-staffed contact centers would not be available until the government reopened, and complaint resolution could be delayed. A lapse does not, on the evidence cited here, cancel federal debt or automatically suspend scheduled payments.
What was the September–October 2026 G5 interruption?
Federal Student Aid scheduled G5 to be unavailable from 3 p.m. Eastern on September 30 through 5 p.m. Eastern on October 1, 2026, for end-of-fiscal-year processing. The notice affected schools’ ability to draw down specified funds during that interval; it was not a general pause in student loan servicing or proof of a Department shutdown.

- G5 drawdowns: Schools could not draw down specified Campus-Based, Pell, TEACH, or Direct Loan funds while G5 was unavailable.
- COD records: The Common Origination and Disbursement (COD) system continued accepting records.
- After reopening: Some funding-level updates and funding were to wait until G5 reopened; schools could draw down under existing authorizations afterward.
The notice is titled “End of Federal Fiscal Year 2026: Impact on G5 and COD”. Its precise dates describe a past, finite system schedule—not a continuing restriction.

| Event | Cause and scope | What the cited materials say |
|---|---|---|
| Appropriations lapse | Federal funding lapses, potentially affecting Department staffing and services. | Some functions may continue using mandatory, carryover, or prefunded resources; staffing and some services may be disrupted. |
| G5 fiscal-year downtime | Planned unavailability of one payment system during a defined accounting window. | Specified school drawdowns paused during the September 30–October 1, 2026 window; COD continued accepting records. |
To assess a future warning, look for an official notice that identifies the event, effective date, affected services, and any borrower or school instructions. A contingency plan describes a possible response; a past system notice describes only its stated window. Neither alone verifies a new shutdown date.
