A wide shoe is not automatically a good fit: the forefoot must give your toes room while the heel stays secure. The available expert-backed recommendations include several models highlighted in a 2024 running-shoe guide, but they do not establish a current, verified ranking of eleven shoes. Treat those models as starting points, check the exact model’s current width options, and try shoes on whenever possible.
What matters when choosing running shoes for wide feet
Look for both width and the right toe-box shape
Choose a correctly sized shoe that lets your toes move without pressing into one another or the sides of the shoe. A wide label can help, but it does not guarantee that a model’s forefoot shape will work for your foot. Prevention’s 2024 guide quotes fitness and nutrition advisor Chris Mohr recommending shoes labeled “wide” or “extra-wide,” and certified running coach James T. Rogers advises that shoes should feel comfortable right away when tried on. Prevention’s running-shoe guide
Do not solve width by buying extra length
Keep the shoe’s length appropriate rather than automatically sizing up to gain width. In Prevention’s February 2026 wide-foot guide, podiatrist Adenike Sonaike warns that shoes that are too large can contribute to tendonitis, tripping or falling, and skin changes such as calluses and blisters. That guide also quotes foot-and-ankle surgeon Sean Peden describing wide feet as a width “that is more than half the length of the foot”; this is a definition reported by the source, not a universal clinical sizing standard. Check the exact width options
Width labels are not necessarily interchangeable across brands. Prevention’s 2026 guide describes labels including wide, X-wide, and XX-wide, and notes that some brands use letter sizing. Check the size chart and width availability for the specific model and size you need instead of assuming a label means the same thing across brands. Prevention’s wide-foot guide

Expert-backed running-shoe examples
The following are models and use cases from Prevention’s September 16, 2024 running-shoe guide. They are useful starting points, not a current October 2026 ranking, and their present generations and width availability should be checked before buying.

Other models mentioned in broader running coverage
NBC Select’s broader running-shoe guide describes the Hoka Clifton 9 as an option for wide feet and bunions recommended by podiatrist Miguel Cunha. It also lists width options for the Brooks Ghost 16 and Saucony Cohesion 17. This is not a wide-foot ranking or evidence that these models were tested specifically on wide-foot runners; verify the current model and available widths before treating any of them as a match. NBC Select’s running-shoe guide
Prevention’s February 2026 guide discusses the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 25 as a supportive walking-shoe option available in wide and extra-wide widths. Because that guide is about walking shoes, it does not establish the GTS 25 as a running recommendation. Prevention’s wide-foot guide

How to check the fit before you buy
- Start with your usual length. Do not jump to a longer size just to gain width; a shoe that is too large can compromise fit and bring the risks Sonaike describes.
- Check the brand’s size chart. Look for wide or extra-wide options in the exact model and size, and confirm how the brand labels its widths.
- Try the shoe on if you can. Rogers recommends a shoe that feels comfortable immediately. Walk or jog briefly in it and check that toes can move without touching one another or the shoe’s sides.
- Check forefoot room and heel hold together. A roomy front is not enough if the heel slips; assess both rather than accepting a loose overall fit to relieve toe pressure.
- Choose cushioning and support by preference and use. The 2024 guide’s comfort and support categories can help you shortlist, but they are not proof of injury prevention or substitutes for how a shoe feels on your foot.
Why this is not an eleven-shoe ranking
The available direct wide-foot running-shoe guide supports four named examples, while the other cited material provides broader running context or concerns walking shoes. It does not verify an up-to-date eleven-model lineup or current availability for every model. Rather than presenting an unsupported top eleven, use the dated examples above as candidates and confirm model generation and width options with the manufacturer or retailer before purchase.
