Lindsley Ruth stepped down as RS Group chief executive with immediate effect on 16 December 2022, citing personal reasons. Chief Financial Officer David Egan served as acting CEO during the search for a permanent successor; Simon Pryce became CEO on 3 April 2023.

Why did Lindsley Ruth leave RS Group?

RS Group said Ruth and the board had agreed he would leave the CEO role for personal reasons. The company’s 16 December 2022 announcement did not attribute his departure to a disclosed performance or governance failure.

Ruth had led RS Group for more than seven years. Chair Rona Fairhead credited him with leading “the turnaround of an underperforming business” and helping create a strong vision and purpose for the company. Ruth said he was proud of the business’s progress and that the time was right for him to step away.

When did he step down, and who led the company next?

The departure followed a short leave period and then a search for a permanent successor:

Date Leadership event
3 November 2022 RS Group announced Ruth was taking a leave of absence for personal reasons. CFO David Egan took on Ruth’s duties alongside his finance role.
16 December 2022 Ruth’s departure as CEO took effect immediately. Egan continued as acting CEO while the board searched for a permanent successor.
3 April 2023 Simon Pryce became CEO, ending Egan’s acting-CEO period.

The leave announcement said Ruth had the board’s support during that period. The later departure announcement made clear that the step-down was immediate, rather than a phased handover.

Was David Egan the permanent CEO?

No. Egan was acting CEO while remaining CFO; he was not the permanent successor. RS Group’s 2023 annual report records Pryce’s appointment as CEO on 3 April 2023.

What later company reporting confirms

RS Group’s 2026 annual report, for the year ended 31 March 2026, records that Ruth’s 2022/23 remuneration was prorated because he stepped down on 16 December 2022. This later disclosure confirms the date; it does not change the reason given in the 2022 announcement.
